  • Varicose veins are a very common condition in the female population, usually due to pregnancy and hormonal alterations. Although there are also cases of men who may suffer from varicose veins.
  • The severity of varicose veins will determine who is in charge of making the diagnosis, with the mildest degrees being determined by general practitioners and the most serious by specialists in the circulatory system.
  • At Operarme we have a wide portfolio of specialists, characterised by a long history of performing varicose vein surgery.

The formation of varicose veins is due to circulation problems, causing swelling and dilation of the veins.

This problem occurs more frequently in women than in men, with the female population being the most affected by this pathology after pregnancy and its consequent hormonal alteration.

Other factors that can lead to the appearance of varicose veins are: genetics, obesity, age and a sedentary lifestyle.

When is it necessary to see a varicose vein specialist?

It is usually advisable to see a specialist as soon as varicose veins become visible or cause discomfort. But above all, special care should be taken and the specialist should be consulted if an increase in size, reddening or hardening of the varicose vein is observed within a short period of time.

Do not forget symptoms such as pain or swelling, even if it is local, as a late diagnosis increases the chances of these discomforts becoming prolonged in time.

The specialist will perform a thorough medical examination along with tests such as Doppler ultrasound and angiogram.

Specialists who treat varicose veins

We will now explain which specialists treat varicose veins and how they can help the patient in each case. We will also explain their roles in the treatment of varicose veins.

General practitioner

In general, when suffering from varicose veins, the patient goes to his or her general practitioner, who sends the patient to see a specialist if necessary.

Once at the doctor's, after explaining your symptoms to the doctor, he or she will determine the initial diagnosis and recommend the most appropriate treatment for the varicose veins.

The general practitioner will carry out a general check-up of the varicose veins, with the option of prescribing medication to alleviate the discomfort caused by the varicose veins. He or she may also give advice on habits to avoid complications.

Specialists who treat varicose veins

If the treatment recommended by the general practitioner does not work properly or the symptoms worsen rapidly, or if the severity of the pathology is at a serious stage, he or she will recommend that the patient see a doctor who is a specialist in the field.

This doctor will be a specialist in general surgery or a specialist in vascular surgery, doctors specialised in blood vessel disorders and experienced in varicose vein removal.

In the following, we will describe the specialist who determines the diagnosis and who is in charge of the treatment of varicose veins.

Defining the varicose vein specialist

First of all, it is important to know that there are currently two types of specialists trained to treat varicose veins. This is due to the fact that, over the years, there has been a branching out in the treatment of the circulatory system, creating a new specialisation such as angiology.

On the one hand, there are doctors specialising in general surgery, specialists with a long career who, from the beginning of their studies, have been trained in surgical treatments related to the circulatory system and the treatment of pathologies such as varicose veins.

On the other hand, there are the new professionals, called angiologists or vascular surgeons according to their speciality, who are trained to study and treat diseases and pathologies affecting the circulatory system.

General Surgeon and Specialists in Angiology and Vascular Surgery

Today this branch of surgery is called angiology or vascular surgery, a medical-surgical speciality dedicated to the study, prevention, clinical and instrumental diagnosis and treatment of vascular pathologies. The object of this surgery is diseases of the circulatory system, i.e. problems affecting the arterial, venous and lymphatic systems.

As for the general surgeon and the angiologist, they are, as we have already mentioned, in charge of treating vascular diseases and pathologies, that is to say, all those conditions that have to do with the body's vessels. In the case of varicose veins, they are responsible for treating chronic venous insufficiency, varicose veins.

The functions of the specialists are:

  • Diagnose and effectively treat varicose veins, whether it is an outpatient procedure or requires hospitalisation.
  • Perform the necessary tests and monitor the patient's recovery.

The vascular specialist will perform a vascular examination and additional tests such as Doppler ultrasound and an angiogram to detect the disease, treat it in time and avoid complications.

The surgeries that this specialist can perform range from minor cosmetic microsurgery of varicose veins, through minimally invasive techniques such as endovascular surgery, to more complex interventions, but always with the best results.
