02. How is Phimosis surgery performed?
Phimosis consists in the difficulty of the foreskin retraction, preventing the gland to stay exposed. This problem can lead to a series of consequences such as penis infections, problems or pain when having sexual relationships and even difficulties to pass urine.
This surgery is frequently performed in children and teenagers, but it may be performed at any age.

Assess your case with a surgeon
Request a free and immediate surgical consultation with our specialist in Urology.
Phimosis treatment is an intervention that is performed under local anaesthesia and lasts less than 30 minutes.
The intervention consists of cutting the foreskin to leave the gland exposed permanently. It’s an outpatient procedure.
When you get to the hospital for admission, first you have to identify yourself as an Operarme patient. You will hand the admission staff all the documentation required and they will take you to a room to prepare you for surgery.
Once in the operating room, you will meet again with the surgeon and the intervention will begin:
- Local anaesthesia will be administered in the area to be operated on , and the patient waits for it to take effect. The patient will feel the penis being manipulated, but won’t feel any pain or discomfort.
- The surgeon will make a cut with a scalpel in the excess foreskin, and place a few stitches. Finally, he/she will apply a dressing.
Phimosis is an outpatient surgery, thus the patient leaves the hospital right after the intervention. Before discharge, the surgeon or the nursing staff will explain to the patient how to take care of the wound, and will set a date for a follow-up visit.
03. Post-operative of Phimosis surgery
The surgery is on an outpatient basis and the patient returns home the same day of the intervention.
Full recovery is not problematic and usually takes up to 8-10 days. During this period of time, it's necessary to be careful not to have erections as they may cause the stitches to be skipped.
The patient also needs to avoid physical effort, and having sexual relationships during the following 4 weeks or until the doctor indicates.
04. Advantages of Phimosis surgery
The advantages of undergoing this surgery are mainly the prevention of infections, an improvement in sexual relationships, and the disappearance of pain during sex.

Frequent Questions
-
How do I know if I have phimosis?
Sometimes phimosis may not present symptoms in a patient, but some of the most common symptoms that may appear over time include the following:
- Difficulty retracting the foreskin
- Inflammation of the foreskin when urinating
- Infection of the glans or foreskin
- Feeling of tightness
- Changes in urinary stream
Even so, the best way to confirm a diagnosis of phimosis is to attend a consultation with a urology specialist so that the doctor can carry out a physical examination and thus confirm the diagnosis and determine the appropriate treatment.
You can book your appointment with one of our specialist urologists by clicking here.
-
How much does Phimosis surgery cost?
Phimosis surgery (circumcision) has a fixed price from €790 through Operarme.
This price includes everything necessary for the procedure: initial consultation with the specialist, preoperative assessment, surgical procedure expenses and medical fees, and post-surgical follow-up consultation.
If you're interested in a quicker and less invasive procedure than the conventional technique, at Operarme we have circumcision available using the Circcurer System, from €1,290. Click here for more information.
-
How long does Phimosis surgery take?
Conventional Phimosis surgery (circumcision) takes approximately 30 minutes in the operating theatre. It is an outpatient surgery, therefore an overnight hospital stay is not necessary: the patient is discharged on the same day as the surgery.
The total time the patient may spend in hospital is approximately 2-3 hours.
-
How long does it take to recover from Phimosis surgery?
Complete recovery after Phimosis surgery is 30 days, although the patient can return to their normal routine 8-10 days after the operation, with some precautions, such as avoiding erections as these may cause the stitches to come undone, and avoiding physical exertion (no exercise, sport or sexual relations for the 4 weeks following the operation).
-
What is the best circumcision technique?
There isn't one surgical technique that's superior to another when treating phimosis or performing circumcision; both the conventional approach and the Circcurer technique effectively remove the foreskin to prevent infections.
The main differences between these two surgical techniques are the shorter procedure time and reduced post-operative inflammation, since the Circcurer system doesn't require the surgeon to suture the incision.
-
Do I have to take a PCR test before surgery?
Currently our collaborating hospitals and surgeons do not ask patients to take a PCR test as a mandatory requirement to enter the operating room.
If exceptionally this test would be required by the hospital or surgeon, we inform you that the PCR test is not included in the price of the surgery.
If you have any questions about this specific issue, please contact our patient service department.
