Who is this breast implant check-up for?

It is primarily aimed at patients who have breast implants and need to undergo a routine control breast implant MRI (recommended 5–10 years after implantation), as well as those patients experiencing persistent breast pain, who suspect an implant rupture, notice changes in the shape or size of a breast, or in cases of patients who are going to undergo breast implant replacement surgery.

A breast implant MRI is a non-invasive and painless test. It does not require any prior preparation as this test is generally performed without contrast.

Even so, it is important for the patient to remember to attend the appointment in comfortable clothing and without any metallic objects, such as watches, piercings, jewellery, belts, keys, etc. They must also inform the technicians if they have a pacemaker or any other type of implanted device.

The test is performed as follows:

1. The patient attends on the day of the scheduled appointment with the centre, and once in the radiology room, they prepare for the test. They will be provided with a gown and must remove any metallic objects they are carrying at that moment.
2. Next, the technicians will give instructions to lie down on the machine's table. The patient must lie face down, placing the breasts on a padded surface with two specific openings for them, from which the detailed images will be obtained.
3. Once positioned and prepared, the table will move into the interior of the MRI machine. It is very important that the patient does not move during the scan and remains still in order to obtain sharp images.
4. During the scanning and image acquisition time, the patient is in communication with the technicians, who will also be giving them instructions.
5. Once the necessary images are obtained, the test is concluded.

The entire process of the breast implant MRI scan usually lasts approximately 20–30 minutes.

The test results are available within 24–72 hours following the completion of the MRI.
