What is an MRI scan for breast implants?
An MRI scan for breast implants is a non-invasive diagnostic imaging test that primarily analyses the condition and integrity of a patient's breast implants, especially when a rupture is suspected.
The purpose of this test is to check the breast prostheses or implants to detect whether there is an intracapsular or extracapsular rupture or defect in the structure of the implant.
It can also detect whether there is inflammation or capsular contracture, that is, the formation of fluid around the implant.
What does a breast implant MRI scan analyse?
This non-invasive imaging test uses a powerful magnetic field and radio waves (without radiation) to obtain various detailed images of the breast implants.
A breast implant MRI can analyse the following aspects:
- The current condition of the breast prostheses to check for the presence of ruptures or defects in their structure.
- Potential silicone leaks.
- Possible displacement or deformity of the implants.
- The formation of fluid around the prosthesis.
- Possible signs of inflammation.
- It also analyses the condition of the breast tissues and the chest wall.
Who is this breast implant check-up for?
It is primarily aimed at patients who have breast implants and need to undergo a routine control breast implant MRI (recommended 5–10 years after implantation), as well as those patients experiencing persistent breast pain, who suspect an implant rupture, notice changes in the shape or size of a breast, or in cases of patients who are going to undergo breast implant replacement surgery.

How is a breast implant MRI scan performed in the Hospital de la Reina?
A breast implant MRI is a non-invasive and painless test. It does not require any prior preparation as this test is generally performed without contrast.
Even so, it is important to remember to attend the appointment in comfortable clothing and without any metallic objects, such as watches, piercings, jewellery, belts, keys, etc. You must also inform the technicians if you have a pacemaker or any other type of implanted device.
The test is performed as follows:
- You attend on the day of the scheduled appointment with the Hospital de la Reina, and once in the radiology room, you prepare for the test. They will provide you with a gown and you must remove any metallic objects you are carrying at that moment.
- Next, the technicians will give you instructions to lie down on the machine's table. You must lie face down, placing your breasts on a padded surface with two specific openings for them, from which the detailed images will be obtained.
- Once positioned and prepared, the table will move into the interior of the MRI machine. It is very important that you do not move during the scan and remain still in order to obtain sharp images.
- During the scanning and image acquisition time, you are always in communication with the technicians, who will also be giving you instructions.
- Once the necessary images are obtained, the test is concluded.
The entire process of the breast implant MRI scan usually lasts approximately 20–30 minutes.
The test results are available within 24–72 hours following the completion of the MRI.

Is the breast implant MRI scan performed with or without contrast?
In most cases, this test is performed without contrast, as the silicone gel of the implants is perfectly visible with a standard MRI, and it does not require the injection of gadolinium liquid.
Even so, there may be some exceptional cases in which the specialist prescribes the test with intravenous contrast, in order to better study cases of inflammation, potential tumours, or suspicious lesions in the breasts.
