  • Circumcision is a simple procedure that is performed on an outpatient basis under local anaesthesia.
  • The surgical removal of the foreskin covering the large foreskin is performed for medical, religious, cultural and aesthetic reasons.
  • Nowadays circumcision has several advantages for the man as well as for his partner, and experts emphasise all the benefits that can be obtained over and above the possible complications.

What does circumcision consist of?

Circumcision is one of the most common procedures today, performed on boys as well as young and adult men. This treatment consists of surgically removing the foreskin, the skin covering the glans penis.

This surgery, which can be performed under local anaesthesia as well as sedation, allows the foreskin to be removed painlessly, quickly and relatively easily. The procedure leaves the head of the penis, the glans penis, permanently exposed.

This type of surgery is usually performed for a variety of reasons, the most common being medical, cultural and religious reasons. You can find these reasons explained in our article on the 3 most common reasons for circumcision.

Although circumcision itself is simple and takes only 20-30 minutes to performunderstanding how it is performed helps you feel more confident about what is happening. Likewise, we know you will find it helpful to know the advantages of circumcision, so we invite you to continue reading the following sections.

As you may have already seen in the various sources of information on the subject of circumcision, there are many conflicting opinions on whether or not circumcision should be performed on newborns or children as well as adults. We warn you beforehand that the advantages discussed below are of a general nature and may vary according to the particular characteristics of each case.

Sexual advantages

Specialists agree that the benefits outweigh the possible risks, because although there is a possibility of complications, such as the possibility of stitches popping out after the operation due to an erection or sudden movement, any doctor or properly trained health personnel can solve the problem and restart the recovery without further setbacks.

This leads us to highlight the advantages of the surgery, informing you, first of all, about the sexual benefits that you and your partner can obtain after circumcision recovery:

  • Circumcision does not increase or decrease your sexual pleasure, but it does make your sensitivity different from that of an uncircumcised man. It usually happens that at the beginning after the surgery you will notice an excess of sensitivity in the area, this is completely normal. Over time you will gradually lose this hypersensitivity and you will be able to go about your day-to-day life without any problems.
  • Another point to note is that in many cases circumcised men have been found to have increased durability during intercourse until ejaculation compared to uncircumcised men, delaying ejaculation and making the sexual encounter longer and generally more pleasurable for both the man and his partner.
  • It should be added that many women find a circumcised penis more hygienic and aesthetically pleasing during intercourse, and a larger glans can increase the sensation of pleasure and enjoyment, although this will depend on the individual case.

While the advantages at the sexual level are clear, it is important to note that at the medical level, circumcision is only recommended if there are functional problems at the medical level, although there is no contraindication to circumcision for other reasons, whether cultural or aesthetic.

Functional advantages

As you may already know, one of the needs for circumcision surgery is to eliminate medical problems such as phimosis, paraphimosis or balanitis, conditions that result from the aggravation of phimosis.

These anomalies affect the retraction of the foreskin and consequently cause pain, and can even lead to impotence or breakage of the frenulum if the tissue is forced down excessively during sexual activities or masturbation.

In this type of case, the only solution is phimosis surgery, circumcision, removing the foreskin, cutting or not cutting the frenulum, although it is usual to cut it, and re-establishing the normal and correct functionality of the penis.

On the other hand, experts point out that after circumcision, the penis tends to grow due to the release of the tension exerted on the glans "head of the penis" when the frenulum is removed, giving the sensation that its length increases. Similarly, the thickness of the glans penis is also increased because the pressure exerted by the foreskin disappears, preventing the characteristic secretion of the penis, which means that when it dries, the size of the tip of the penis is perceived to be larger. Despite these facts, the penis does not grow, it remains exactly the same.

Circumcision surgery

Circumcision is also associated with a decreased likelihood of penile injury, such as the dreaded penile fracture, which often requires medical attention. Although this type of injury can occur in both circumcised and uncircumcised men, it has been observed that surgery during which the foreskin is removed can prevent such accidents, making intercourse safer in that respect. However, as long as safe practices are carried out, penile rupture is very unlikely to occur.

Hygienic advantages

All uncircumcised males have a discharge called smegma. This substance serves to protect and lubricate the foreskin. It is a whitish, viscous secretion made up of sebum, sweat, dead skin cells and bacteria, so it must be constantly and properly cleansed to prevent it from building up between the glans and foreskin and causing problems such as infection and odour.

This is one of the hygienic advantages of circumcision. By removing the foreskin, smegma cannot accumulate between the tissues, thus keeping the glans clean, avoiding other infectious problems and slightly reducing the possibility of transmitting STDs to partners. However, the only way to avoid STDs is to use a condom.
