02. How is Water Vapour Prostate Surgery performed?
Water Vapour Prostate is a surgical treatment in which water vapour is injected in the enlargement of the prostate. Through this technique the tissue necrosis (dead cells) will be eliminated afterwards by the body itself.
This treatment is based mainly in the energy of the water vapour injected in the prostatic gland.
Water Vapour Prostatectomy is an intervention carried out through the urethra. The surgeon uses a cystoscopy-like gun, connected to a generator, that heats the sterile water to about 103 degrees.

This water vapour therapy can only be performed on patients with prostatic glands between 30-80 grams of weight.
Water Vapour Prostatectomy is an intervention that is performed under sedation and lasts between 10 to 15 minutes.
These are the steps the surgeon takes to perform a Water Vapour Prostate Treatment:
- First of all, the anesthesiologist applies a light sedation.
- When the sedation takes effect, the surgeon introduces the endoscope through the urethra.
- Next, the urologist will inject water vapour into the prostatic gland, that is blocking the passage of urine.
- Later on, the water vapour turns back to water, releasing the energy that will cause the tissue necrosis.
- The cells will end up being reabsorbed by the body itself, over time
Once the surgery is done, the surgeon will place a catheter that will be removed in 3-4 days after the intervention; this is done so that the minimal inflammation that occurs during the intervention does not obstruct the flow of urine.
The patient leaves the hospital on the same day of the surgery.
03. Post-operative of Water Vapour Prostatectomy
This intervention is an outpatient surgery, and the patient goes home on the same day of the procedure. The surgeon will give you the date for your follow-up appointment after surgery, before leaving the hospital.
Full recovery time for this intervention is around 2-3 weeks after the day of the intervention.
04. Advantages of Water Vapour Prostatectomy
Since this technique has been established in the urologic speciality, the more conventional techniques for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia have taken a back seat. Unlike other surgical techniques, water vapour treatment is the minimally invasive alternative for prostate treatment.
The advantages associated to water vapour treatment are several, compared to other prostate surgeries:
- The water vapour surgical treatment is a quick, short procedure.
- This type of treatment is a minimally invasive surgery.
- There’s no need for general anaesthesia, the patient just needs a light sedation for this procedure.
- This surgery does not require hospitalisation of the patient; it’s an outpatient surgery.
- Full recovery is quicker and with little discomfort.
- Water Vapour treatment preserves male sexual function, including ejaculatory function.
