Vasectomy is generally performed under local anaesthesia, being an outpatient surgery, so you can return home the same day and on your own feet. 

Complications are minimal if you follow the guidelines indicated by the doctor in the following days and its effectiveness is practically 100%, although as we will indicate later on, you have to wait 3 months for the sperm count to be zero.

Vasectomy is intended to sterilise a man, so this is often the main reason for performing it. While this is the purpose of vasectomy, the reason is to make use of vasectomy as a method of contraception, there may be more to it:

• Contraceptive method. In this case, vasectomy is usually performed on couples who have already fulfilled their desire to have children and want to stop using contraceptive methods such as condoms and also to avoid contraceptives that cause hormonal changes in the woman. It may also be the case that the woman may have a risky pregnancy and this method is chosen to avoid it. Vasectomy in young, unmarried men is very rare, as few patients request it and doctors are usually a little reluctant to do it, insisting that the patient think about it.

On the day of your consultation with the specialist, first of all, you will need to bring the documentation that the Operarme’s patient service team will have given you. 

Once there, the urologist will receive you and will discuss with you your general state of health and the reasons why you want to have the vasectomy operation.

Once the medical interview is over and if no contraindications have been found, the doctor will inform you if the surgery is viable, as well as explaining what it consists of and what the procedure will be.

Afterwards, and if you have decided to go ahead with the surgery, along with the surgeon, you will determine the day of the vasectomy operation at that very moment.

Unlike most operations, vasectomy surgery does not require a complete preoperative procedure, as it is a simple surgery (performed by a specialist, of course) and is performed under local anaesthesia.

Only on some occasions is a coagulation analysis requested, although this depends on the case and the patient. The blood test is done to determine if there is any infection and if there is any associated problem that could compromise the operation.

As aforementioned, the anaesthesia used in vasectomy is local, which will allow you to go home the same day, making vasectomy an outpatient surgery. In case you have had any complication with the anaesthesia or are allergic to any drug, you should inform the doctor immediately to prevent complications and to be properly prepared for the vasectomy.

On the day set for the vasectomy, you must come fasting and with all the necessary documentation that must be handed in at the admission desk. Vasectomy is performed under local anaesthesia.

Once the documentation has been submitted, you will be taken to a room where you will wait briefly for your name to be called to enter the operating theatre. You will first enter a pre-surgical room, where you will be asked to undress and change into your scrubs. You will then be taken to the operating theatre where you will meet the urologist and a member of the nursing team who will assist you during the procedure.

Vasectomy surgery at the Hospital Parque Vía de la Plata: step by step

Once in the operating theatre and before the anaesthesia takes effect, you will be positioned on the stretcher as indicated by the surgeon and then the operation will begin:

1. If necessary, the area will be shaved to avoid infection and to make it easier for the doctor to see. After this, the area will be disinfected and the local anaesthetic will be applied to the groyne, scrotum and areas near the genitals.
2. Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, the surgeon will begin the operation by making an incision in the lateral area of the scrotum, where the vas deferens is located.
3. A part of the vas deferens is then removed and a portion of the vas deferens is severed, and the two remaining ends are sewn together to facilitate healing.
4. The next step is to reintroduce the sutured portions inside and suture the cut made in the scrotal area.
5. Once this has been done, the same process is carried out on the other side of the scrotum.
6. Finally, a gauze pad is placed over the area and the vasectomy is completed.

The duration of the vasectomy is approximately 30 minutes, depending on the characteristics of each patient.

After the vasectomy surgery, you will be taken to the recovery room. You will remain in this room until you recover from the effects of the anaesthesia and the doctor tells you that you can go home with the relevant recovery instructions.

As we mentioned in the previous sections, you will be able to return home the same day without having to stay in the Hospital Parque Vía de la Plata. As for the length of this recovery period, you will be back to normal after a month, but the discomfort disappears much sooner, usually after the first week.

After the vasectomy and after you have recovered from the effects of the anaesthesia, you can go home.

Other important things to remember about recovery are explained below:

• It is best that you do not drive after surgery, so it is advisable to ask a friend or relative to accompany you on the day of the operation.
• During the first week it is normal to feel discomfort, and the doctor will prescribe painkillers to help you cope with the pain, which should gradually disappear.
• The total recovery time is usually approximately one month, although discomfort and pain are usually only present during the first week.
• It is advisable not to exert yourself too much the day after surgery, and to stay at home quietly to prevent the stitches from opening.
• Dressing should be done twice a day, as the hospital will explain to you until the stitches fall out.
• Finally, it is advisable to avoid baths and to take quick showers, as well as to wear briefs to avoid excessive rubbing and movement of the testicles.

When does a vasectomy become effective?

After the vasectomy operation, it is important to avoid unprotected sex with your partner until one month after the surgery, as there is a risk of pregnancy because sperm can remain in the upper part of the vas deferens and in the urethra.
