Information of Vasectomy surgery

01. Information on Vasectomy surgery

Vasectomy surgery is voluntary and consists of the sectioning of the vas deferens to prevent sperm from joining the seminal fluid and being expelled during ejaculation. This operation is used by men as a method of contraception to avoid having children. It is an irreversible operation and must be considered carefully.

If the decision is made, the Vasectomy surgery will be performed.

02. What is a Vasectomy surgery needed for?

Vasectomy surgery is a voluntary operation and is intended to sterilise the man. This surgical intervention is chosen by many couples as a method of contraception when they decide that they do not want to have any more children.

The effectiveness of this operation is 99.5 percent and complications during or after surgery are minimal.

Vasectomy surgery

03. What does vasectomy surgery consist of?

First, the scrotal area and the side of the penis will be washed and shaved, and the patient will almost certainly need to fast.

Once in the operating theatre, the patient will be placed face up on the stretcher, leaving only the penis and scrotum uncovered. A local anaesthetic is then injected into the scrotum, groyne or areas near the genitals.

You will be awake during the whole process and may even feel a touch, but you will not feel any pain.

Once the anaesthesia has taken effect, a cut is made on the side of the scrotum where the vas deferens (the tube that carries sperm from the testicles to the urethra where they join the sperm) is located. When the cut has been made, some of the vas deferens is removed and a small portion is cut off, and then both ends are sewn together to prevent the sperm from passing from one side to the other.

As there are two testicles, this process must be done on both sides, so it will be necessary to repeat the process.

When each of the cuts has been made, the incisions are stitched with absorbable stitches and protective gauze.

The operation can last from 30 minutes to over an hour, depending on the patient, but there are usually no complications.

04. How much recovery time is needed after a vasectomy?

Normally, and if you do not experience any exceptional pain, you will be able to go home soon after the operation. It is advisable to be driven home and not to drive yourself if the doctor gives you painkillers for the pain.

Vasectomy is an irreversible operation.

After the vasectomy operation, during the first ten days, you may experience swelling in the scrotal pouch and the operated area as well as bruising in the area. If the wound hurts or bleeds a little, don't worry, this is normal. If you feel that the bleeding, pain or bruising is disproportionate and lasts too long, do not hesitate to consult your doctor.

You should not do any heavy exercise for a week, wait a day or two before bathing and use ice and tight pants, which will help the swelling go down.

Recovery time after a vasectomy

As for sexual activity, you should be able to resume normal sexual activity once the swelling has gone down.

After vasectomy surgery, you should continue to use some other method of contraception for 3 months and until you have 2 spermiograms with negative results, as there is a possibility that sperm may still be present in the extra duct near the prostate, and these may be expelled during ejaculation.

Once the results are negative, there is no danger of pregnancy.

05. What are the benefits and risks of having a vasectomy surgery?

The main and only advantage is the purpose of the vasectomy surgery itself, which is to sterilise the man to prevent his partner from becoming pregnant.

In terms of risks, there are the risks of any surgery (bleeding or infection), although in this surgery the chances are negligible. As additional risks to this surgery, there is the possibility of the wound becoming infected, the appearance of epididymitis, which consists of an uncomfortable sensation in the area of inflammation with testicular problems, or a haemorrhage in the scrotum with haematoma, which can reach the penis with pain and inflammation.

Regardless of the physiological problems, the most common problem is the man's regret after the vasectomy operation, as it is irreversible.

06. Some interesting facts about vasectomy surgery

There are some erroneous beliefs about the vasectomy operation, such as that the man's virility is lost, ejaculation does not occur, erection problems exist, etc. Vasectomy only prevents sperm from reaching the urethra and joining the semen for ejaculation, thus preventing pregnancy. The rest, blood and hormone supply to the genitals, as well as erection and libido function perfectly well as before.

There are reported cases of the severed ducts being reattached, but they are so few as to be irrelevant.

Although it is an irreversible operation, there is a type of operation called vasovasostomy, but the chances of being able to have children again after this operation are less than 10%.

The first vasectomy in history was performed by Sir Astley Cooper in 1823 on a dog.
