Information of Vasectomy reversal surgery (Vasovasostomy) in Marbella

  • Vasovasostomy in Marbella

Vasovasostomy, also known as vasectomy reversal, is the surgery in which the ends of the vas deferens that were cut during the vasectomy are reconnected.

After vasovasostomy, semen will once again contain sperm in each ejaculation. In fact, the main reason why men undergo vasectomy reversal is to regain fertility and have children naturally.

For vasovasostomy, it is essential that the doctor performing the procedure is experienced in microsurgery. Vasectomy reversal will be performed by the Clinica Premium, at the Dr. Gonzalo Sanz Pérez in Marbella.

  • There are several reasons why men choose to undergo vasovasostomy:

    • Changing their mind about not having biological children again.
    • Starting a relationship with a new partner who wants to have children.

In any case, the age of the partner should be considered when deciding on vasovasostomy, whether it's the same partner or a new one. If the partner is over 35 years old and has not had children previously, it's advisable to assess the chances of pregnancy.

Through a simple blood test on the third day of menstruation, a woman's ovarian reserve can be determined.

If your partner is fertile, vasectomy reversal will be the best option for achieving pregnancy. In case the partner has a low ovarian reserve, it may be more advisable to consider in vitro fertilization techniques, after sperm aspiration from the man.

Similarly, it will also be ideal to know if you can produce healthy sperm. Having had children before undergoing a vasectomy is a good indicator. However, if the doctor deems it necessary, they may recommend an additional test to ensure the presence of sperm in the ejaculation after the procedure.

    Vasectomy reversal treatment

  • If, after discussing it with your partner, you have decided to undergo vasovasostomy, we remind you that Operarme offers a free initial surgical assessment consultation with the Dr. Gonzalo Sanz Pérez.

In this consultation, the urological specialist will assess your current health condition. Additionally, they will be interested in knowing if you and your partner have the appropriate conditions to have children after vasectomy reversal.

For this reason, it is important that you bring your medical history and, if available, a spermogram prior to the vasectomy to verify the quality of your sperm.

With this information, the specialist will be able to create a surgical diagnosis and recommend or not recommend vasovasostomy.

However, the doctor may schedule a preoperative appointment, which consists of three essential tests to confirm that your health is suitable for the surgery:

    • A blood test to check coagulation and your overall health.
    • An electrocardiogram to assess the health of your heart.
    • A chest X-ray, if the doctor deems it necessary.

  • The surgery to reverse a vasectomy, known technically as Vasovasostomy, is performed under spinal anesthesia. Although the surgical intervention is minimal, the procedure requires more time and precision than a vasectomy.

It is essential that the doctor performing the vasovasostomy is a specialist in urological microsurgery.

The use of a microscope is vital to correctly treat the vas deferens, as its diameter is similar to that of a spaghetti strand, and the sutures used are finer than human hair.

The vasectomy reversal is performed as follows:

    • Once the anesthetic takes effect, the microsurgery specialist makes an incision to reach the point where the vas deferens were cut during the vasectomy.
    • Next, the surgeon will section each of the sealed ends to check for the presence of spermatic fluid.
    • After verifying the presence of sperm under the microscope, the surgeon will inject saline solution into the segment of the vas deferens to ensure its permeability.
    • The urological microsurgery specialist proceeds to reconnect the ends of the vas deferens using almost invisible needles and threads.
    • Finally, the incision made in the scrotum to access the vas deferens is closed.

At the end of the surgery, the specialist may leave a rubber drain in the scrotum, which will be removed after a few hours. However, this only happens in specific cases.

Vasectomy reversal surgery lasts between 2 and 4 hours.

Unlike the vasectomy, which takes 10–30 minutes, vasovasostomy requires more surgical time and high expertise in microsurgery from the specialist performing the procedure.

  • As it is a minimally invasive surgery, you will not take long to return to your normal life. Usually, discomfort will disappear within 3–4 days after the procedure.

Vasectomy reversal has a very low rate of postoperative complications. Some patients may experience swelling in the scrotum or bruising in the groin. However, there is no need to worry, as these will usually go away within a few days.

It is recommended to wear tight-fitting underwear to prevent excessive movement of the scrotum for at least 2 weeks.

The medical team will provide you with a prescription for painkillers and antibiotics to alleviate any discomfort you may have during the first few days after the vasectomy reversal surgery.

Additionally, it will be important to follow the medical instructions to promote a quick recovery. Some of these include:

    Postoperative care after vasovasostomy:

    • Do not drive during the first week.
    • Do not ride a motorcycle or bicycle until 3 weeks have passed.
    • Do not shower until 48 hours have passed.
    • Do not engage in sexual intercourse for at least the first 10 days.

    recovery after vasectomy reverse surgery

  • You are probably wondering how long it takes after vasovasostomy to get your partner pregnant. Although it is difficult to answer this question universally, patients typically regain fertility between 3 and 8 months after surgery.

Approximately 35% to 90% of patients will have sperm in their semen one month after vasovasostomy.

However, these figures may vary depending on the conditions previously mentioned. The specialist will be able to clarify all of this during your first surgical assessment consultation. To check for the presence of sperm, a spermogram, or semen analysis, is performed.

In some cases, pregnancies occur 3 months after surgery. However, other patients may take up to 2 years to show a normal spermogram. For this reason, knowing the quality of the sperm before performing vasovasostomy is ideal to determine whether vasectomy reversal treatment is appropriate to achieve natural conception.
