02. How is Urolift Prostate Surgery performed?

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia affects more than 528 millions of men worldwide Conventional prostate treatments with or without laser imply postoperative side-effects that may affect the sexual function of the patients (erectile dysfunction, urine incontinence or retrograde ejaculation).

Thanks to technological advances in terms of minimal invasion surgery and improvement of the patient’s quality of life, we offer the UroLift System Prostate Surgical Treatment, that allows solutions for the problem related to BPH maintaining full sexual function and even improving it.

The UroLift System treatment is indicated for patients who cannot undergo conventional surgery due to other pathologies.

UroLift System urethral release surgery is recommended for prostates smaller than 60cc, having the most optimal results on prostates smaller than 50cc. The exact size of the prostate is determined before surgical treatment through an ultrasound.

Urolift prostate surgery

UroLift System prostate surgery is performed in the following 5 steps:

  • A standard cystoscope, properly lubricated, is inserted transurethrally (through the penis). This surgical tool provides a point of entry for the UroLift system device that is required to perform the surgery. Once the cystoscope is placed, the UroLift device is inserted until it reaches the area of the urethra (the area where the urethra passes through the prostate, just outside the bladder).
  • Once the device of the UroLift System has reached the area aforementioned, it will press the end of the device into one of the anterolateral lobes of the prostate.
  • At this point, the surgeon will activate the device by deploying a needle from the distal end of the device through the previously compressed urethral prostate tissue, and into the capsular prostate tissue (tissue lining the prostate gland).
  • When the needle reaches the capsular prostate, using the UroLift device, the surgeon unfolds the capsular reed of the implant. The surgeon then retracts the needle again by maintaining compression and tightening the suture.
  • Finally, maintaining tension on the suture and compression of the prostatic lobe, the urethral clip of the implant is placed through the UroLift device and the excess suture is cut, freeing the urethral tube by keeping compressed the prostatic tissue that caused the obstruction. Lastly, the device is removed.

These steps are performed as many times as implants the patient needs to free completely the urethral tube: the normal average is 4 implants, however each patient is different, and some people need sometimes just 2 and others even 6; but the treatment is equally effective in all cases and the results can be seen shortly after the procedure through an endoscope.

UroLift Prostate Surgery takes 15 to 20 minutes, and it doesn’t require hospitalisation. The patient is discharged a few hours after the intervention.

03. Post-operative of Urolift Prostate Surgery

One of the differentiating features of this procedure is that there’s no need for hospital stay, since it does not require general anaesthesia.

In most cases, the patient leaves the hospital without a catheter and with an instant relief of the previous symptoms.

Recovery at home only takes a couple of days if the patient follows the surgeon’s instructions, and doesn't make efforts during the following days after surgery. Total recovery will be completed after 2 weeks of the intervention, being able to have sexual relationships by that time.

04. Advantages of Urolift Prostate Treatment

The advantages for UroLift Prostate Surgery are numerous in comparison to conventional surgical treatments of the prostate, such as the TURP treatment.

Advantages of Prostate Treatment

The benefits are the following:

  • Immediate and visible results. Once the surgery has been completed, the surgeon can check the interior of the urethral tube through an endoscope and confirm that the obstruction has disappeared.
  • Outpatient surgery. This surgery is performed under light sedation, thus the patient does not require hospitalisation, being able to leave the hospital by himself on the same day of the intervention.
  • Minimal invasion technique. By using a natural orifice for the approach and not removing prostate tissue, risks and complications are minimised as much as possible.
  • Entering the operating room could be avoided. This surgery only takes 20 minutes and in most cases is an outpatient intervention, which could imply avoiding the O.R.

However, at Operarme we follow a strict protocol for asepsis and safety of the patient, thus all our surgeries are performed only in the operating rooms where medical safety conditions are thorough.

  • Outpatient surgery. In most cases the patient leaves the hospital by himself in the following hours of the intervention, meaning that there is no need for hospitalisation.
  • There is no need for a catheter. Since prostatic tissue is not removed in the intervention, there is no need for the patient to have a catheter on after discharge from the hospital.
  • Preservation and enhancement of full sexual function.
  • 0% cases of retrograde ejaculation.
  • 0% cases of erectile dysfunction in the long term (during the first two weeks after the surgery it is likely to suffer from erectile problems, but these ones disappear in all cases).
  • 0% cases of urine incontinence.
  • In clinic studies, patients treated with the UroLift system have improved their erectile function by 30%.
  • Low complications rated (disappear after 2 weeks) and re-intervention rates. Long-lasting results over time.
  • Fast recovery. The relief of the symptoms is automatic and the patient regains his normal routine a few days after the intervention. Two weeks after surgery the improvements of the symptoms will be significant. Compared to other prostatic techniques, recovery is quite superior.
