Preliminary study and consultation with the anaesthesiologist

On the day set for the coagulation analysis, you will have to go to the hospital with the necessary documentation (don't worry, our patient care team will have indicated this to you). Only one test will be carried out there:

• Coagulation analysis: this allows you to find out whether or not the patient's blood is clotting correctly.

Normally, in more complex surgeries, several additional tests are carried out, such as a chest x-ray or electrocardiogram. In the case of phimosis surgery, as it is a very simple operation that is performed in little more than 20 minutes and with localised anaesthesia and sedation, it is not necessary. 

Sedation allows the patient to remain completely asleep during the surgery, avoiding stress and nerves during the procedure.

In the case of phimosis surgery, circumcision, the anaesthesia used is local anaesthesia with sedation, so you will remain asleep during the whole operation. It should be remembered that this is an outpatient procedure lasting between 20-30 minutes and that you will be able to go home after recovering from the effects of the anaesthesia without the need for hospitalisation.

After you have been admitted, you will be taken to a room where you will wait to enter the operating theatre. You may be given antibiotics before the operation to prevent the possibility of infection, but this is not common.

When you enter the operating theatre at the time of the operation, you will be met by the specialist and an assistant from the nursing team.

Circumcision takes just 30 minutes.

You will be positioned on the stretcher as the surgeon instructs, which is usually on your back with your legs raised and spread, and you will be covered with a surgical sheet over all but the area to be operated on. Next, the anaesthetist will administer sedation so that you remain asleep during the surgery:

1. Next, they will wash and disinfect the penis and then administer the local anaesthetic to the area, waiting briefly until it takes effect to start the surgery.
2. Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, the specialist will section off the remaining part of the foreskin and put in the necessary stitches.
3. After that, he or she will bandage the operated area and finish the process.
4. You will then be taken to a post-surgical room where you will recover from the effects of the anaesthesia.

As soon as you have recovered from the effects of the sedation and anaesthesia, you will be able to get dressed and will be discharged from the hospital to go home.

Full recovery after circumcision takes place one month after the surgery.

Once the phimosis surgery, circumcision, has been performed, it is important that you carry out a correct postoperative period to avoid possible complications. The specialist or his team will explain the postoperative care of the surgical wound as well as some recommendations. They will also prescribe painkillers to alleviate any pain you may experience. In this case, aspirin should never be used, as it dilutes the blood and hinders healing.
