Information of Penile Implant Surgery in Madrid

  • Information about penile implant surgery in Madrid

On this page, you will find comprehensive information about the surgical procedure used to treat erectile dysfunction: inflatable penile implant surgery performed at the Lyx - Centro Médico Quirúrgico by the Lyx Urology Team.

As you may already know, erectile dysfunction is a medical condition that makes it difficult or impossible to achieve or maintain an erection firm enough for satisfying sexual intercourse.

To address this issue, one of the most commonly recommended solutions by urology specialists is the use of implanted devices. These devices, known as penile implants, can help many men with erectile dysfunction regain the ability to have an erection.

Below, we explain the reasons for choosing inflatable penile implant surgery, as well as the entire surgical process and the benefits it can offer to improve your overall health and quality of life.

  • penile implantis one of the most effective long-term solutions for treatingerectile dysfunction (ED). When other treatments—such as oral medication or intracavernosal injections—fail to produce satisfactory results, penile implant surgery can restore a normal and fulfilling sex life for the patient.

Implanting a penile prosthesis is typically considered the last line of treatment after less invasive methods have proven unsuccessful.

In recent years, penile prosthetic surgery has seen significant advancements in both materials and surgical techniques. These improvements have led to fewer complications and a higher level of patient satisfaction, making this a safer and more effective solution for men struggling with ED.

To determine whether the treatment is suitable, it is essential to consult a urology specialist, obtain a proper diagnosis, and explore the options that best fit the patient’s specific needs.

Consultation with the Lyx Urology Team

A proper diagnosis—understanding the root cause of the erection problem—is key to selecting the most effective treatment and avoiding unrealistic expectations. After scheduling and attending your consultation with the Lyx Urology Team, the urologist will carry out several assessments and an in-depth interview to understand your individual case.

The standard protocol during this consultation includes:

    • Review of your complete medical history
    • Anatomical examination
    • Analysis of medical tests (such as ultrasounds, blood tests, etc.)

Based on this evaluation, the urologist will determine the origin of the erectile dysfunction—whether it stems from a physical or organic issue, has a psychological cause, or is a combination of both. This information will allow the specialist to recommend the most suitable treatment for your case.

If you decide to proceed with penile implant surgery during the consultation, you can schedule the date of the procedure directly with the urologist at that time.

The day after your consultation, a member of our patient service team will reach out to follow up, see how everything went, and ask whether you’ve decided to proceed with the surgery.

If you confirm, your personal patient advisor will guide you through the next steps, including scheduling the pre-operative tests and anesthesia consultation, and answering any questions you may have throughout the process.

  • To assess your overall health before undergoing the implantation of an inflatable penile prosthesis, the following preoperative tests will be conducted:

    • Electrocardiogram (ECG): To evaluate the condition of your heart.

    • Chest X-ray: This is not always required and will be requested only if the physician deems it necessary. It helps detect potential pulmonary issues and ensures the trachea is properly aligned.

    • Complete blood test: This includes a full blood count, basic coagulation panel, renal function test, and glucose levels. A urine test will also be performed to rule out any infections.

After these tests—either on the same day or another—you will have a consultation with the anesthesiologist who will be present during your surgery.

During this consultation, it’s important that you inform the anesthesiologist if you:

    • Have any known allergies
    • Are taking any medications (prescription or over-the-counter)
    • Have had any previous surgeries
    • Need a general health review and evaluation of your preoperative test results

This consultation will determine the most appropriate type of anesthesia for your procedure.

If the anesthesiologist gives medical clearance, the next step will be to go to the hospital on the scheduled day for your surgery.

  • On the day of the surgery, at the Lyx - Centro Médico Quirúrgico, you will need to present your documentation at admissions. From there, you will be taken to the operating room, where you will once again meet the Lyx Urology Team, the anesthesiologist, and one or more members of the nursing staff who will assist during the procedure.

To help you understand what the surgical procedure involves, below are the steps followed in the operating room:

Penile prosthesis implantation surgery lasts approximately 50 to 60 minutes.

    1. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, the urologist will make a small incision, about 3 cm, in the scrotum or just above the pubic bone.
    2. Through this small incision, the urologist inserts all the components.
    3. The pump system is placed inside the scrotum. The cylinders are inserted into the corpora cavernosa of the penis. The fluid reservoir is placed in the lower part of the pump system.
    4. After placing the penile prosthesis, the incision is sutured, and the surgery is concluded.
    5. The procedure is performed under regional anesthesia, from the waist down, and typically lasts 50–60 minutes.

In general, you will need a few days to return to your regular routine, starting with light activities and gradually increasing as you recover. Specialists usually recommend waiting about 5 to 6 weeks before resuming sexual activity.
