Information of Hydrocele repair surgery in Alicante

  • Information on Hydrocele repair surgery in Alicante

On this page you will be able to find all the information related to the surgical process to solve the problems caused by the hydrocele, hydrocelectomy, repair surgery performed in the HLA Vistahermosa Clinic in Alicante, by the Equipo de Urología HLA Vistahermosa.

A testicular hydrocele is the accumulation of serous fluid around one of the testicles, more specifically in the spermatic cord, between the two layers of the tunica vaginalis covering the testicle and the inside of the scrotum.

Below, we explain the reasons why hydrocelectomy is used, as well as the whole process involved in this operation and its benefits for improving your health and quality of life in general.

  • The main reason for treating a hydrocele is the discomfort it can cause, the painful inflammation or the aesthetic reasons to be solved. The only solution for hydrocele is hydrocelectomy, which consists of the removal of this serous accumulation. With regard to testicular hydrocele and its origin, we can differentiate between two types:

    • Congenital hydrocele: it is born with it and it is advisable to wait until the child is a year or a year and a half old, as it usually disappears on its own and no surgical intervention is necessary.
    • Acquired or chronic hydrocele: occurs in adult men throughout life, usually due to injury or inflammation within the scrotum. It can occur in one or both testicles, the latter being called bilateral testicular hydrocele. It is solved by a surgical intervention, the hydrocele operation.

Generally, the only symptom of a hydrocele is a painless swelling of one or both testicles.

As mentioned above, the need for hydrocele surgery is determined by the symptoms (pain, infection) or for cosmetic reasons. In the case of boys, hydrocele can disappear between 14 - 24 months without the need for surgery.

  • Hydrocele surgery in Alicante is performed by the Equipo de Urología HLA Vistahermosa at the HLA Vistahermosa Clinic, one of the most prestigious private hospitals in Alicante.

First of all, you must request a free surgical assessment consultation with the Equipo de Urología HLA Vistahermosa. Either by filling in the contact form, by calling at +34 91 141 33 56, or by clicking on Make an appointment, that you will find throughout this page, such as the one below:

After requesting your appointment, one of our personal advisors from the Patient Service Department will call you to welcome you and confirm that the date and time of the consultation fits in with your schedule, in case it is necessary to change it, as well as to guide you and answer any questions you may have throughout the process.

From then on, you will be able to contact your personal advisor directly to resolve any queries you may have.

  • During the consultation with the specialist, he or she will carry out an anamnesis of the patient (medical interview), asking you about the symptoms, discomfort and problems you are suffering from due to this pathology. Once this has been completed, a physical examination will be carried out to determine whether an operation is indeed indicated or if, on the contrary, it can be solved with conservative treatment.

It is important that on the day of the consultation you bring all the medical evidence you have on the basis of the problems caused by the hydrocele to allow the doctor to make a better diagnosis.

In the event that the hydrocele repair surgery is indicated and you, together with the specialist, agree to carry out the hydrocelectomy, a day for the operation will be established in the HLA Vistahermosa Clinic.

After the consultation with the urologist, your personal patient service advisor will contact you to ask you how the appointment went and, if you have decided to go ahead with the hydrocele surgery, will arrange the pre-operative and operation day, explain the payment methods and tell you about all the procedures and documentation required for the next step, allowing you to worry only about your health.

  • On the day of the pre-operative hydrocele operation, you will hand in your paperwork at the hospital reception desk and then you will be accompanied to undergo the necessary pre-operative tests:

    • Complete blood test: To determine if there is any infection and if there is any associated problem that could compromise the operation.
    • Electrocardiogram: To determine the health of the patient's heart.
    • Chest X-ray: To find out if there is any lung pathology as well as if there is any problem with the patient's rib cage.

After the preoperative, usually on the same day, a consultation with the anaesthesia specialist will take place to determine and explain the type of anaesthesia to be used during the hydrocelectomy, being spinal in most cases although in some cases it can be general, as well as to find out more about your lifestyle (if you are a smoker, alcohol intake, diet, etc.) in order to perform the intervention as safely as possible.

  • Approximately one hour before the operation, you should apply a cream to the groyne (previously shaved), more specifically in the area near the scrotum, which will have been indicated to you by the specialist or medical team in consultations prior to the operation.

Once in the hospital and in the operating theatre, the urology specialist will administer a series of antibiotics that will reduce the possibility of infection during the operation.

Hydrocele surgery is performed under spinal anaesthesia.

The anaesthesiologist will then sedate the patient, in most cases using spinal anaesthesia. The hydrocele operation will then begin:

    1. After the anaesthesia has taken effect, the surgeon will make an incision in the scrotum, no more than 3-4 centimetres long. This incision will allow the surgeon to reach the area where the hydrocele is located. In the case of a bilateral testicular hydrocele (in both testicles), the incision is first made on one side and then on the other.
    2. After dissection of all the scrotal layers, the surgeon reaches the tunica vaginalis, where the testicular hydrocele is located.
    3. Once the testicular hydrocele is located, the surgeon will proceed to aspirate the fluid accumulated in the hydrocele until the sac decreases in size, so that it can also be removed. The remaining fluid is then removed.
    4. After the removal of the fluid and the sac, the hydrocele problem will be solved and the area will be sutured.

Once the surgery is over, you will have to stay in a post-surgical room for about an hour until you recover from the effects of the anaesthesia and it is possible to take you to your room to continue recovering.

Hydrocelectomy is a simple operation, lasting between 20 and 60 minutes, depending on the type of testicular hydrocele (bilateral or unilateral) and the size of the sac.

  • After the operation and before you are discharged from the hospital, the medical team will explain to you how to clean the surgical wound and what post-operative care is required.

After the hydrocelectomy, you can return to your normal activities after 4-5 days.

The main instructions to follow after a hydrocelectomy are as follows:

    • Every 6 - 8 hours you will have to take mild painkillers orally to control the pain that the postoperative period may cause, as indicated by the specialist.
    • To prevent free movement of the scrotal pouch, a scrotal jockstrap should be worn for the first few weeks.
    • The surgical wound should be cleaned regularly to avoid infection and problems with the surgical incision.

As for post-operative visits with the specialist after hydrocelectomy, the first consultation is usually the day after the surgery, and subsequent check-ups are at the discretion of the specialist.

After discharge, it can normally take between 4 and 5 days to return to normal daily life, although the scar may take a little longer to heal.

  • The advantages of undergoing a hydrocele surgery are obvious: disappearance of pain, improvement in quality of life and, above all, a very low chance of recurrence. Therefore, this operation is more than recommendable to be able to lead a normal life again.
