02. How is a hip replacement surgery done?

Total Hip replacement is a major surgery that is performed under general anesthesia, and takes approximately 1 to 2 hours to complete the procedure.

Total Hip replacement surgery

Below we explain, in a very simplified way, the steps followed to carry out a total hip replacement intervention:

  • Administration of general anesthesia.
  • Vertical incision in the joint area.
  • Cutting of the bone and extraction of the head of the femur.
  • Removal of damaged cartilage.
  • Placement of the artificial prosthesis.
  • Repair of ligaments and other damaged structures.
  • Closure of the surgical incision.
  • Placement of a sterile bandage.

You can request your appointment with one of our specialists in the image below. Do not hesitate more and solve all your concerns regarding the intervention and its post-surgery stage at a face to face consultation with one of our surgeons. Get a surgery date on the same visit:

Postoperative of Total Hip replacement surgery

Once the surgery is completed, you will remain hospitalized for 4 to 5 days, under medical observation. When the analytical and radiological controls are correct, you will be discharged from hospital.

The total recovery time of a hip surgery ranges between 2 and 6 months.

In order to help you with the recovery process, the surgeon could recommend physiotherapy in your particular case (some patients may need it, but this is not a general recommendation for all patients who undergo a hip replacement).

Rehabilitation sessions are not included in the price of the surgery, since each patient requires a specific recovery. However, if you are a patient of Operarme you can enjoy our rehabilitation packs at a preferential price. If you want more information, do not hesitate to contact our patient service team.

03. Advantages of hip replacement surgery

The main advantage of the total hip replacement is pain relief and as a result, an improvement in your quality of life. However, doing a hip replacement has many more benefits for joint health, so surgery is, in most cases, the best choice:

  • Eliminate hip pain. After hip surgery, the most annoying pain and symptoms disappear.
  • Correct deformity. It is important to replace the hip joint in time so that there is no decompensation in the joint arch of the leg that affects the knee as well.
  • Recovery of mobility. After the placement of the total hip prosthesis, you will be able to carry out a stable walking, although progressively.
  • Independence in the day to day. Some of the patients who undergo total hip surgery have a degree of dependence of 100% in daily activities such as dressing, washing, etc. This changes after hip replacement surgery, regaining independence.

In addition, the risks associated with hip arthroplasty are very well controlled. Infection of the prosthesis only happens in 2% of cases and mechanical problems, such as prosthesis loosening, occur very rarely.

  • Through Operarme, the waiting time to get hip replacement surgery is estimated between 15-17 days after meeting the surgeon in a first surgical consultation, and confirming the procedure.

  • Hip replacement surgery is one the most common and performed surgeries in Spain. It is estimated that around 35.000 hip prostheses are implanted every year in our country.

Although this intervention does not imply high risk, as in any major surgery, there are low risks of complications.

  • The duration of hip arthroplasty is 1 – 2 hours, depending on several factors.

When we talk about duration, we are referring to the time you will be in the operating room. This may vary due to factors such as the type of surgery performed (primary or revision) or your current state of health. Read more.

  • Hospitalization time after hip surgery can vary depending on the type of surgery performed, the patient's general health, and the protocol followed by the medical team.

Generally, the hospitalization period is usually about 2 to 5 days, but in some cases, it could be shorter or longer. Read more.

  • The total recovery time after hip replacement surgery ranges between 2 and 6 months.

    • If your work does not require much physical effort, you may be able to return to your routine after 2 months.
    • On the other hand, to perform tasks that require a little more intensity, rehabilitation of 4 - 6 months may be necessary. Read more.
  • After hip surgery, the specialist or physiotherapist will recommend how and how much the patient should walk, in most cases, on the same day of the operation or the next day.

It must be taken into account that in the early stages of recovery, the objective is to mobilize the area and prevent stiffness and/or complications. To do this, it is recommended to walk very short distances with the help of a walker, crutches or canes.

As recovery progresses, it is common for the patient to walk several times a day for 5-10 minutes and increase the time and distance.

  • Currently our collaborating hospitals and surgeons do not ask patients to take a PCR test as a mandatory requirement to enter the operating room.

If exceptionally this test would be required by the hospital or surgeon, we inform you that the PCR test is not included in the price of the surgery.

If you have any questions about this specific issue, please contact our patient service department.
