If you need guidance on the surgical process, the postoperative stage and the advantages of having Knee ligament surgery (cruciate ligaments), we offer you more detailed information below.

02. How is Cruciate ligaments Surgery performed?

A torn ligament is usually caused by an exaggerated movement of the knee while the foot is placed in a flat position on the ground. When the ligament ruptures, the knee loses stability and causes significant pain every time you put your injured leg on the ground. In some cases, recovery without surgery is not a viable option.

Cruciate ligaments give stability to the knee by preventing dislocation, which means preventing the bone from slipping out of the joint.

ACL ligament or PCL ligament is generally repaired after a recent or old sports, occupational or traffic trauma, resulting in pain, failure and instability of the knee, always after a period of rehabilitation.

Therefore, once the ligament torn has been caused, the most recommendatory option is to have surgery to repair the anterior or posterior cruciate ligaments.

Knee Ligament Surgery

When a patient makes the decision of having surgery for cruciate ligaments, it’s important to take into account a few steps previous to the surgery in order for it to be performed as safely and effectively as possible. We’re going to explain below step by step how cruciate ligament surgery is carried out at Operarme.

First of all, the patient has been previously diagnosed with a ligament problem in his/her knee and needs surgery to repair it, so the patient books a surgical assessment consultation with one of our traumatologists, through our website.

You can ask for an appointment by clicking on the “Make an appointment” button, calling at +34 91 141 33 56 or filling our contact form here.

Make an appointment

Once the patient has attended the appointment and the surgeon has confirmed the intervention and technique, our patient service team will contact him/her to inform about the schedule and coming appointments of the patient’s surgical procedure.

Knee Ligament Surgery is a major surgery that is performed under general/regional anaesthesia and lasts between 30-90 minutes.

These are the steps the surgeon takes to perform a knee ligament surgery:

  • First of all, regional or general anaesthesia will be given to the patient, and the surgeon will wait until it’s taken effect on the patient.
  • The surgeon will start by making small holes in the knee where the tubes and the surgical instruments are inserted, so the surgeon can work throughout the intervention with the aid of a monitor.
  • Once the tubes and instruments have been placed, the surgeon will make a small incision in the anterior part of the knee, in order to extract the tissue and make the new ligament.
  • The tissue is prepared to the same exact measures and reinserted into the tunnels made, which are locked with the corresponding screws and at the exact tension.
  • At the end of the intervention, the surgeon will suture the incisions (stitches) and place dressings over them.

This intervention lasts approximately between 30 and 90 minutes, although it will always depend on the severity of the case and the patient’s health and conditions.

After the surgery, the patient will remain admitted into hospital for 1-2 days so the surgeon can control and check the post-surgery recovery.

03. Post-operative of Cruciate ligaments surgery

After 12 - 24 hours of the surgery, the surgical team will remove the drainage tube and place the knee in a motorised splint that mobilises the knee passively. Thanks to this splint, you will be able to move your knee without any effort, achieving 90-100º of mobility during the first week.

Knee Ligament Surgery

The patient will receive instructions on exercises to prevent atrophy of the knee muscles in order to be able to start walking with the help of walking sticks after the intervention.

The day of the discharge the patient will receive a discharge report with instructions to continue with the recovery at home.

You will be able to walk within 24 hours from the intervention, with the aid of crutches; move the knee within 12-24 hours; bend the knee to a right angle after one week; and achieve full mobility of the knee between the second and fourth post-surgery week.

Full recovery is achieved between the sixth and the eight weeks, taking into account that the patient needs to rest and don’t make any effort or physical activities during the recovery time. At the same time, it’s important to not engage in contact sports before 6 months have passed since the surgery.

04. Advantages of Knee Ligaments surgery

The main advantage is the relief from continuous pain when walking.

Also recovery is much faster and painless, since the surgeon uses a minimal invasive technique to perform the surgery, implying as well a reduction in the time of admission into the hospital.
