02. How is Bunion Surgery without Osteotomy performed?

Hallux Valgus or Bunion is the deviation of the first metatarsal at the base of the big toe. This causes a protrusion on the outer side of the foot, which can lead to a painful and uncomfortable infection or inflammation.

There are different techniques to perform hallux valgus surgery, however this particular one without osteotomy is used when there’s no need of cutting the bone to repair the bunion.

It’s a minimally invasive technique, also known as percutaneous surgery.

When a patient makes the decision of having surgery for hallux valgus surgery without osteotomy, it’s important to take into account a few steps previous to the surgery in order for it to be performed as safely and effectively as possible. We’re going to explain below step by step how bunion surgery without osteotomy is carried out at Operarme.

Bunion Surgery

First of all, the patient has been previously diagnosed with a bunion problem and needs surgery to repair it, so the patient books a surgical assessment consultation with one of our traumatologists, through our website.

You can ask for an appointment by clicking on the “Make an appointment” button, calling at +34 91 141 33 56 or filling our contact form here.

Once the patient has attended the appointment and the surgeon has confirmed the intervention and technique, our patient service team will contact you to inform about the schedule and coming appointments of your surgical procedure.

Hallux Valgus Surgery is a major surgery that is performed under local/regional anaesthesia and lasts between 30-90 minutes.

These are the steps the surgeon takes to perform a Bunion Surgery without osteotomy:

  • First of all, regional anaesthesia will be given to the patient, the surgeon will also place next to the gurney an x-ray machine that will help him/her during the procedure to check every step he takes repairing the bone.
  • The surgeon starts by making a small incision, in order to access the Hallux Valgus.
  • Through the incision, the specialist will introduce a surgical instrument to separate the bone from the tissue surrounding it.
  • Next, with the help of surgical instruments, the surgeon will start filing down the protruding bone, which is the Hallux Valgus.
  • Right after he/she will make another incision between the first two fingers, will section the tendon, and the capsule that holds the deformity of the finger; thus, the deformity will be corrected.
  • Following the correction of the hallux valgus, the surgeon will make another small incision in the base of the big toe to guide it into position to prevent the bunion from developing again.
  • The last step is to suture the incisions made and place a bandage in the foot to secure that the finger will stay in the correct position. This bandage will be removed after 2 weeks from the surgery.

This intervention lasts approximately between 30 and 90 minutes, although it will always depend on the severity of the case and the patient’s health and conditions.

03. Post-operative of a Bunion surgery without osteotomy

This surgery is an outpatient intervention, leaving for home right after the intervention.

After the procedure, you will be taken to a recovery room to fully recover from the anaesthesia. Afterwards, you will remain under observation until the doctor gives the patient the discharge from the hospital.

The duration of the full recovery from a Hallux Valgus surgery will depend on different factors, such as the severity of the deviation, the patient’s background information, and the technique chosen for the intervention.

Bunion Surgery

Depending on the patient’s professional activity, you may be able to return to your routine sooner or later. For example, an office worker may be able to return to work 15 days after surgery or even sooner. On the other hand, a person whose job requires long hours on their feet or on the move may need up to 3 months to recover before returning to work.

04. Advantages of Bunion Surgery without osteotomy

The main advantage is the relief from continuous pain when walking, besides this surgery also helps prevent the injury from getting worse over time.

Also recovery is much faster and painless, and there’s barely scarring compared to the conventional technique for bunion repair.
