02. How is a bunion surgery with osteotomy technique done?
Bunion surgery with osteotomy technique is a minor surgery that is performed under regional anesthesia and lasts 30 to 90 minutes.
The operation with osteotomy consists of the alignment of the metatarsal, cutting part of the bone that causes the bulge due to its deformity

Below we explain, in a very simplified way, the surgical process of the bunion surgery with osteotomy technique:
- Administration of general regional.
- Incision in the bunion area to reach the bone without damaging nearby tissues
- Cut part of the bone
- Repositioning of the bones with material that helps bone growth
- Placing the necessary screws (sometimes only one is placed)
- Closure of the surgical incision.
- Placement of a sterile bandage.
Postoperative of a bunion surgery with osteotomy technique
Once the surgery is completed, the medical team will check that your medical controls are positive and you will be discharged from the hospital. Being a minimally invasive surgery, you do not need to stay hospitalized.
You will want to avoid putting your foot down for 3 to 6 weeks, although the swelling will subside before week 10.
Full recovery from the bunion surgery occurs 1 year after surgery and long-term results are excellent.
In order to help you with the recovery process, your doctor will recommend you physiotherapy or not (some patients may need it, but this is not a general recommendation for all patients).
Rehabilitation sessions are not included in the price of the surgery, since each patient requires a specific recovery. However, if you are a patient of Operarme you can enjoy our rehabilitation packs at a preferential price. If you want more information, do not hesitate to contact our patient service team.
03. Advantages of bunion surgery with osteotomy technique
The main advantage of the hallux valgus operation osteotomy is pain relief and as a result, an improvement in your quality of life. However, doing a hallux valgus operation has many more benefits for joint health, so surgery is, in most cases, the best choice:
- Eliminate the pain. After bunion surgery, the most bothersome pain and symptoms disappear.
- Correct deformity. It is important to perform the surgery on time to prevent the decompensation from worsening.
- Recovery of mobility. After the intervention, you will be able to perform a stable walk, without discomfort.
In addition, the risks associated with the hallux valgus operation osteotomy, such as the difficulty of the wound not healing well or nerve damage, are very well controlled and occur very rarely.
