01. What medical problems are treated in Urology?
Urology is a Medical-Surgical Speciality whose purpose is the study, diagnosis and treatment of medical problems associated with the urinary system, adrenal glands and retroperitoneum in both women and men, as well as the treatment of pathologies associated with the male reproductive system.
Among the medical problems that are usually treated in a urology consultation are treatments for BPH or Prostatitis, where the patient comes to the consultation with symptoms related to difficulty urinating or infection, problems related to kidney stones or in some area of the urinary system, oncological diagnoses (although these require additional tests); as well as problems directly related to the male reproductive system, mainly related to the subspecialty of andrology, such as impotence or erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation or male infertility.
Other problems such as varicocele, hydrocele, phimosis, cysts in the genital area, etc. are also diagnosed. The diagnosis and treatment of different sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) is also carried out.
In the case of men over the age of 50, the aim of the consultation with the urologist is usually to check the prostate in order to make an early diagnosis of prostate-related pathologies, such as prostatitis, BPH or prostate cancer.
In addition to diagnosing or treating a specific medical problem, another reason why a consultation with a Urologist is usually requested is to obtain a second opinion, i.e. a patient has already been diagnosed with a specific problem by another Urology Specialist and wants to know the opinion of a different specialist.
Regarding the age of the patients who attend a Urology consultation, the spectrum is very wide: from young and healthy patients who are suffering from an acute process, to elderly patients who have several acute and chronic problems, and even oncological patients.

03. What is a Urology consultation?
On the day of the consultation with the Urologist, you must go to the address indicated on the medical voucher. Our patient service team will call you the day before the visit, to make you a reminder of the appointment.
Once in the doctor’s office, the consultation will begin as follows:
- Medical interview: The patient explains to the Urologist what his or her problem is, what is causing pain, the reason why he or she needs a check-up or a second opinion on a previous diagnosis, etc. At the same time, the doctor may ask other questions related to the problem.
- Review of medical tests and reports: It is common for the patient to come with a diagnosis made by another specialist, and tests such as PSA tests, prostate or testicular ultrasound scans, which are checked by the specialist to learn more about the patient’s case to assess the problem and possible treatment.
- Physical examination: In some cases, depending on the reason for the consultation, the Urologist will carry out a physical examination of the problematic area, for example, if the patient has a phimosis problem, prostate-related symptoms, cysts or lumps in the testicular area, the doctor will need to perform a physical examination to determine this.
- Diagnosis and treatment: After checking all the information presented to the specialist, the specialist may confirm a definitive diagnosis or require additional medical tests. In some cases, the specialist will prescribe a treatment for the problem, either by prescribing medication or indicating some recommendations for the daily life; in other cases, it is possible that more medical tests may be necessary in order to make a definitive diagnosis, in this case should contact Operarme so that we can provide you with preferential prices for diagnostic tests. The doctor will make a report of the consultation with his/her final assessment and medical recommendations.
If a second consultation is necessary to control how the treatment is working or to see the evolution of the problem in case it gets worse, please contact us so that we can arrange it for you.
In any case, our patient service team will help you with any doubts or questions you may have after the consultation.
04. How long does the consultation with the Urologist last?
The duration of the consultation varies depending on the problem the patient has. Operarme recommends that before the consultation you prepare a list of questions for the specialist, so once the consultation is over, you can leave with all your doubts cleared up or with your medical problem being solved with a medical treatment.
05. Treatments and complementary tests after consultation
Both the prescribed treatment and the request for complementary tests are subject solely to the professional opinion of the Specialist in Urology, whom you have the consultation with.
In any case, the treatment prescribed by the doctor may be of a different nature, such as prescribing medication, indications for a change in the diet or lifestyle habits that are affecting your health problem; in some cases, surgical treatment will be the only solution to the problem.
On the other hand, if the Urologist considers that it is necessary to carry out more diagnostic tests to complete a diagnosis of your problem, you have the option of performing the test through Operarme at preferential and fixed prices.
