Information of Consultation with a Traumatologist

01. What medical problems are treated in Traumatology?

The speciality of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Surgery aims to treat pathologies related to the musculature and bones (musculoskeletal system), whether congenital (from birth), or acquired due to traumatic processes (sports injuries, accidents, etc.), degenerative processes such as osteoarthritis, tumors and infections.

The main reasons for consulting a Specialist in Traumatology and Orthopaedic Surgery are the prevention, diagnosis or treatment of sports injuries, such as contractures or fibrillar breaks, in the case of the musculature, or fissures, breaks, sprains or strains in the case of bones, without forgetting problems in tendons, ligaments, etc. If you have noticed a muscle or joint popping, the best thing to do is to visit an orthopedic surgeon.

In the case of elderly people, one of the reasons for visiting a traumatology specialist is pain and problems related to degenerative diseases, such as osteoarthritis or osteoporosis, pathologies that tend to affect the elderly in most cases.

In addition to diagnosing or treating a specific medical problem, another reason for consulting a traumatologist is to obtain a second opinion, i.e. a patient has already been diagnosed with a specific problem by another traumatologist and wants to know the opinion of a different specialist.

Regarding the age of the patients who attend a traumatology consultation, the spectrum is very wide: from young and healthy patients who are suffering from an acute process, to elderly patients who have several acute and chronic problems.

Below, we explain how to purchase a Traumatology Consultation at Operarme.

03. What is a Traumatology consultation?

On the day of the consultation with the Traumatologist, you must go to the address indicated on the medical voucher. Our patient service team will call you the day before the visit, to make you a reminder of the appointment.

Once in the doctor’s office, the consultation will begin as follows:

  • Medical interview: The patient explains to the Traumatologist what his or her problem is, what is causing pain, the reason why he or she needs a check-up or a second opinion on a previous diagnosis, etc. At the same time, the doctor may ask other questions related to the problem.
  • Review of medical tests and reports: It is common for the patient to come with a diagnosis made by another specialist, an ultrasound scan and other types of tests, which are checked by the specialist to learn more about the patient’s case to assess the problem and possible treatment.
  • Physical examination: In the case of problems related to the musculoskeletal system, the orthopaedic surgeon will perform a physical examination of the affected area. For example, if the patient has noticed a popping sound in the knee, the doctor will check the joint to determine whether it is a torn ligament or a meniscus problem. This methodology works in the same way for most orthopaedic pathologies.
  • Diagnosis and treatment: After checking all the information presented to the specialist, the specialist may confirm a definitive diagnosis or require additional medical tests. In some cases, the specialist will prescribe a treatment for the problem, either by prescribing medication or indicating some recommendations for the daily life; in other cases, it is possible that more medical tests may be necessary in order to make a definitive diagnosis, in this case should contact Operarme so that we can provide you with preferential prices for diagnostic tests. The doctor will make a report of the consultation with his/her final assessment and medical recommendations.

If a second consultation is necessary to control how the treatment is working or to see the evolution of the problem in case it gets worse, please contact us so that we can arrange it for you.

In any case, our patient service team will help you with any doubts or questions you may have after the consultation.

04. How long does the consultation with the Traumatologist last?

The duration of the consultation varies depending on the problem the patient has. Operarme recommends that before the consultation you prepare a list of questions for the specialist, so once the consultation is over, you can leave with all your doubts cleared up or with your medical problem being solved with a medical treatment.

05. Treatments and complementary tests after consultation

Both the prescribed treatment and the request for complementary tests are subject solely to the professional opinion of the Specialist in Traumatology and Orthopedic Surgery, whom you have the consultation with.

In any case, the treatment prescribed by the doctor may include the prescription of medication, a series of exercises or referral to physiotherapy, immobilisation of a limb, surgical treatment for repair, etc.

On the other hand, if the Traumatologist considers that it is necessary to carry out more diagnostic tests to complete a diagnosis of your problem such as MRIs or x-rays, you have the option of performing the test through Operarme at preferential and fixed prices.
