01. Which problems are treated by Ophthamology and Ocular Surgery?
Ophthalmology is a medical-surgical speciality dedicated to the study, prevention, clinical/instrumental diagnosis, and treatment of eye diseases, including the eyeball, its muscultaure, the lacrimal system and the eyelids.
The most common medical problems that can be treated in an ophthalmology consultation with the specialist are the following: myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, presbyopia, conjunctivitis, keratitis, lacrimal sac problems, strabismus, cataract, retinal diseases and glaucoma.
In addition to diagnosing or treating a specific medical problem, another reason why people usually request a consultation with an ophthalmologist is to obtain a second opinion, i.e. a patient has already been diagnosed with a specific problem by another specialist in ophthalmology and eye surgery, and wants to ask for the assessment of a different specialist.
The age of the patients who attend the Ophthalmology and Ocular Surgery Consultations is wide: ranging from young patients who suffer from problems such as the development of hypermetropia, as well as older patients who require a periodic review of any problem.

03. What is an Ophthalmology consultation?
On the day of the consultation with the ophthalmologist, the patient goes to the doctor's office, which address is indicated on the medical voucher that the patient receives in his email, right after purchasing the consultation on our website. Our Patient Service team will call you the day before the visit, to make you a reminder of the appointment.
Once in the doctor’s office, the consultation will begin as follows:
- Medical interview: The patient explains to the Specialist what his or her problem is, what is causing pain, the reason why he or she needs a check-up or a second opinion on a previous diagnosis, etc. At the same time, the doctor may ask other questions related to the problem.
- Review of medical tests: It is common for the patient to come with a diagnosis made by another specialist, an ultrasound scan and other types of tests, which are checked by the specialist to learn more about the patient’s case to assess the problem and possible treatment.
- Physical examination: In some cases, depending on the reason for the consultation, the ophthalmologist will carry out a physical examination of the eye area.
- Diagnosis and treatment: After checking all the information presented to the specialist, the specialist may confirm a definitive diagnosis or require additional medical tests. In some cases, the specialist will prescribe a treatment for the problem, either by prescribing medication or indicating some recommendations for the daily life; in other cases, it is possible that more medical tests may be necessary in order to make a definitive diagnosis, in this case should contact Operarme so that we can provide you with preferential prices for diagnostic tests. The doctor will make a report of the consultation with his/her final assessment and medical recommendations.
If a second consultation is necessary to control how the treatment is working or to see the evolution of the problem in case it gets worse, please contact us so that we can arrange it for you.
Remember that if you have any questions related to the consultation, either before or after, you can contact our Patient Service Department.
04. How long does the consultation with the Ophthalmology Specialist last?
The duration of the consultation varies depending on the problem the patient has. Operarme recommends that before the consultation you prepare a list of questions for the specialist, so once the consultation is over, you can leave with all your doubts cleared up or with your medical problem being solved with a medical treatment.
05. Treatments and complementary tests after consultation
Both the prescribed treatment and the request for complementary tests are subject solely to the professional opinion of the Specialist in Ophthalmology, whom you have the consultation with.
In any case, the treatment prescribed by the doctor may be of a different nature, such as prescribing medication, indications for a change in the diet or lifestyle habits that are affecting your health problem; in some cases, surgical treatment will be the only solution to the problem.
Regarding complementary tests that the specialist may request, the most common are usually biomicroscopy, intraocular pressure or tonometry, evaluation with ophthalmoscopy, retinography, OCT, angiofluoresceingraphy, colour test, electrophysiological examination, among others; although all of this will depend on what the specialist needs to make a definite diagnosis.
If medical tests are necessary, you can perform the tests through Operarme.
