02. How is Upper Eyelid Surgery performed?
This surgery, also commonly known as Blepharoplasty, is an outpatient intervention aimed to repair drooping eyelids. It is an optional, uncomplicated, outpatient procedure with excellent long-term results.
Drooping of the upper eyelids is mainly caused by ageing. The most common patients to undergo upper blepharoplasty tend to be over 35 years of age, regardless of whether they are women or men, although women are usually more concerned about this cosmetic issue and decide to undergo upper eyelid lift treatment.
Besides ageing causes, there is also a medical problem known as Palpebral Ptosis, which is normally caused by a congenital problem that alters the eyelid muscle, preventing the eye from opening fully.
The only solution for this medical problem is a surgical treatment: an upper blepharoplasty.
Other causes of drooping of the upper eyelids can be allergic reactions, muscular diseases, neurological diseases or trauma to the area.
This loss of elasticity of the skin and muscle of the upper eyelids can lead to a loss of vision because the eyelid covers part of the eye. In these cases the only possible option is the upper blepharoplasty surgical treatment.
When a patient makes the decision of having upper eyelid surgery, it’s important to take into account a few steps previous to the surgery in order for it to be performed as safely and effectively as possible. We’re going to explain below step by step how this intervention is carried out at Operarme.
First of all, the patient books a surgical assessment consultation with one of our cosmetic eye surgeons, through our website.
You can ask for an appointment by clicking on the “Make an appointment” button, calling at +34 91 141 33 56 or filling our contact form here.

In this consultation with the specialist, the patient meets with the doctor and chat about the eye's characteristics, possible treatments and the results and success of the intervention if performed.
During this visit, the patient may ask all the questions regarding eyelid surgery to the specialist; a questionnaire on lifestyle habits, previous surgeries, allergies, eye problems, medication, etc will be carried out as well. The aim is to make the procedure as safe and precise as possible.
During the consultation, the ophthalmologist will carry out a complete eye examination of the patient to determine that there are no associated pathologies. This is not a problem for carrying out with the intervention, but it is important to have them checked before the surgery.
Upper Blepharoplasty surgery: step by step
When you get to the hospital for admission, first you have to identify yourself as an Operarme patient. You will hand the admission staff all the documentation required and they will take you to a room to prepare you for surgery. It is important for the patient to be accompanied as the area treated surgically will be swollen after the intervention.
Once in the operating room, you will meet again with the surgeon and the intervention will begin:
- First of all, local anaesthesia with sedation will be given to the patient, meaning that the patient stays asleep throughout the procedure.
- The surgeon starts by making two oval shaped incisions with a scalpel, in the middle area of the upper lid.
- Right after, the surgeon will remove the excess skin from the eyelid and sculpt the fat underneath, so that the eyelid is aesthetically pleasing.
- Then, the specialist will suture the incisions and place dressings.
- Once the surgery is finished, the patient will be transferred to a room where he/she will recover from anaesthesia, and cold and anti-inflammatories will be applied to the area intervened to reduce the initial inflammation.
- The patient will be discharged and leave the hospital by his/her own foot on the same day.
The duration of Upper Blepharoplasty surgery is between 35- 45 minutes.
03. Post-operative of Upper Eyelid Surgery
The duration of the recovery process from eyelid surgery usually does not usually exceed one month, but in order to avoid possible complications, it’s important that the patient carefully follows all the indications established by the surgeon. By doing so, the results will be optimal and the recovery will be as short as possible.
It is important to avoid physical overexertion during the first week of post-operative recovery so that the stitches do not come out.
During the first three days after the intervention, it is quite common to suffer from ocular dryness and difficulty to fully close the eyes.
After the first week, the patient will be able to resume his/her daily routine, right after the first post-surgery visit.
The second follow-up visit would take place in the following month after the surgery.
04. Advantages of Upper Eyelid Surgery (blepharoplasty)
The main advantage is generally cosmetic, since this surgical technique achieves a younger appearance thanks to the repair of drooling upper eyelids.
In the case of patients diagnosed with Palpebral Ptosis, full sight can be recovered and also full mobility of the eyelid.
