01. What is hip rehabilitation treatment?
After a hip prosthesis surgery, the rehabilitation process is determinant, because after surgery the muscle strength in the area is lost and weakens easily.
The most important concern in a hip fracture rehabilitation is to keep the muscles active in order to prevent possible atrophy, and not lose partial or complete mobility of the area, as well as to avoid future complications affecting the balance and / or coordination of hip movements.
In addition, hip rehabilitation aims to achieve the following:
- Maintain the active musculature to prevent atrophy and subsequent long-term complications.
- Avoid difficulties affecting gait, balance and coordination.
- Avoid the risk of dislocation of the joint due to a poorly performed movement.
The most important thing during the rehabilitation of a hip fracture, which is a long process and in which the patient's involvement is of vital importance, is the early mobility of the area in order to recover the greatest possible range. It is recommended to start moving as soon as possible, as long as the patient can do so without pain, first with the aid of walkers, and later with canes or crutches, until he/she is able to walk without support.
After the intervention of implantation of a hip prosthesis, it is of vital importance to give way to rehabilitation with the help of physiotherapists and specialists in functional rehabilitation. They will prescribe a series of exercises and treatments that you should perform in order to keep you active and maintain good mobility in the joint, to complete the full recovery.
Among the exercises to recover the mobility of the hip are the following:
- As long as your surgeon gives you advice, the first exercise is to start supporting your legs with the help of a walker or crutches, 24 hours after surgery. This is the first phase and usually lasts up to 6 weeks.
- Perform ankle, knee and hip flexion exercises in unloading. These movements favor to improve the mobility of the joints and musculature, besides to lower the inflammation and to diminish the pain.
- Re-education of gait. It will consist of working the stabilizing muscles of the hip.
- Muscular toning of all the musculature of the lower limbs.
- To improve stability, the specialists will work on the central area, which mainly involves the abdomen and lumbar spine.
- Walking. This phase involves progressively increasing the distances and removing the crutches as the patient becomes more stable and ready for it.
Recovery varies depending on multiple factors. Age, level of joint deterioration, health status, weight, and body composition are some of them. Generally, recovery time varies between 2 - 4 months with certain limitations, and between 6 - 12 months to achieve full recovery.

03. What does a Hip Rehabilitation session consist of?
Depending on the clinic, the methodology during the rehabilitation session may vary; however, it is generally carried out as follows:
- The first session is usually a little longer than the following ones since the rehabilitation doctor first comes into contact with the patient and needs to conduct an interview to go over his medical history and become familiar with his case, in order to confirm the type of treatment to be carried out in the following sessions.
- Then, the rehabilitation treatment begins, which the physiotherapist designs especially for the patient taking into account the injury and its extent. Rehabilitation consists of different exercises carried out from less to more as the sessions progress. It usually begins with stretching with the aim of rehabilitating the damaged tissues as soon as possible. As we have said, each patient needs a personalized assistance and supervised by a professional, so the recovery exercises will vary between patients even if they share the same trauma.
- The physiotherapist will monitor the progress and improvement of the joint and muscle strength in the injured area and will add exercises or modulate their intensity.
- At the end of the ten sessions, the physiotherapist will indicate to the patient if he/she needs any more sessions or if the evolution is positive and he/she can continue recovering at home doing physical activity always indicated by the specialist, to continue increasing the muscular strength of the hip.
The rehabilitation sessions have an approximate duration of one hour, without taking into account the interview time that you will spend with the specialist so that he/she can familiarize himself/herself with your case.
The total recovery after the hip prosthesis operation can have a duration of between 6 and 12 months, depending mainly on the characteristics of each patient.
As we indicated, previously, after the session the specialist will indicate you the date and time of your next appointment. In addition, he will surely indicate you some exercises or guidelines that you will have to follow at home to continue improving your recovery.
