Information of Tympanoplasty (tympanic membrane repair) in Lleida

  • Information about Tympanoplasty (tympanic membrane repair) in Lleida

Tympanoplasty in Lleida with Operarme is carried out at the Clínica HLA Perpetuo Socorro by the Equipo de Otorrinolaringología del HLA Perpetuo Socorro. Both are specialists in Otorhinolaryngology, with extensive experience in treating conditions related to ear, nose, and throat disorders.

Below, you will find all the necessary information about the procedure—from the causes of tympanic membrane perforation or tear to the recovery process and the benefits of tympanoplasty.

  • First, you will need to book a surgical assessment appointment, completely free of charge and with no waiting time, through Operarme. This will give you the opportunity to meet the specialist and explain your case or your child’s case in detail.

You can request the appointment by clicking on “Request Appointment”, by contacting our Patient Service Team through the contact form, or by calling at +34 91 141 33 56.

On the day of your appointment at the Clínica HLA Perpetuo Socorro, the doctor will review any medical reports you bring and carry out a medical interview to better understand the symptoms caused by the inflammation and infection in the affected ear.

They will also examine the ear canals to become familiar with your specific case, allowing for a more accurate diagnosis and to determine the most appropriate treatment for you or your child.

During this consultation, the specialist will explain what the tympanoplasty surgery involves and will answer any questions you may have. Don’t hesitate to ask about any aspect of the procedure or your condition—being well informed will help you make the best decision.

If, together with the Equipo de Otorrinolaringología del HLA Perpetuo Socorro, you decide that tympanic membrane repair is the most suitable option for your case or your child’s, the surgery date can be scheduled during the same consultation. In any case, our patient care team will follow up with you and manage the entire process.

  • Usually, the waiting time between your consultation with the specialist and the surgery is approximately 7 to 10 days. This period depends on the availability of the operating theatre and whether preoperative tests are required.

During the preoperative assessment, you will undergo several tests, such as:

    • Electrocardiogram (ECG): This test allows the surgeon and anaesthetist to assess your cardiovascular health.
    • Blood tests: These are used to detect any abnormalities or conditions such as infections that might delay the surgery until properly treated.
    • Chest X-ray: This is only carried out if deemed necessary by the medical team, helping to rule out infections and verify correct tracheal alignment in case intubation is needed.
    • CT scan (computed tomography): Performed only if required by the specialist, this test provides detailed imaging of the internal structure of the skull and can help detect infections or foreign bodies in the ear cavity. As this test is not required in all cases, it is not included in the price of the surgery and will need to be paid for separately by the patient. If you have any questions about this, please contact our Patient Service Team.

    Anaesthesia consultation

During the consultation with the anaesthetist, they will review your preoperative test results and ask you several questions about your lifestyle, previous surgeries, and any medication you may be taking. The information gathered in this appointment helps determine whether you are fit for tympanoplasty surgery and which type of anaesthesia will be most appropriate.

In tympanoplasty procedures, local anaesthesia with sedation is typically used. However, in some cases, general anaesthesia may be administered, depending on the surgeon's evaluation.

  • The surgery is performed at the Clínica HLA Perpetuo Socorro. Upon arrival, the first step will be to report to admissions and hand in the necessary documents for hospital admission. Please remember that your personal Patient Service Advisor will have already informed you of what to bring and explained the process.

Next, a member of the clinic staff will escort you to the surgical area, where you will be asked to undress and change into surgical clothing.

Once you are ready, you will be taken to the operating theatre, where you will meet the surgeon you previously consulted with—the Equipo de Otorrinolaringología del HLA Perpetuo Socorro—along with the anaesthetist and a member of the nursing team.

Once positioned on the surgical table, the procedure will begin:

    • First, the anaesthetist will administer the appropriate anaesthetic, either local with sedation or general anaesthesia. You will feel the effect quickly and will not experience any pain or discomfort during the operation.
    • Once the anaesthesia has taken effect, the surgeon will make an incision either behind the affected ear or inside the ear canal.
    • When the surgical site is reached, any infection, damage, or disease within the ear will be thoroughly cleaned. Next, the torn edges of the tympanic membrane will be trimmed and repaired, or the eardrum will be completely removed if necessary.
    • The next step is to use a graft to close or replace the damaged eardrum. This graft may be taken from another part of your body or may be a prosthetic graft.
    • Once the graft is in place, small absorbable stitches will be used to secure it.
    • Finally, antibiotic foam will be applied to the ear canal to prevent infection. After removing the surgical instruments, the initial incision will be closed with sutures.

Once the tympanoplasty surgery is complete, you will be moved to the post-operative recovery room, where you will recover from the effects of the anaesthesia under the supervision of the nursing staff.

Depending on the complexity of the procedure, you may be discharged the same day or remain in hospital for an additional day until you are ready to continue your recovery at home.

Tympanoplasty surgery typically lasts between 1 and 2 hours, depending directly on the complexity of the case—particularly if it is also necessary to perform a mastoidectomy or an ossicular reconstruction.

  • After the tympanoplasty surgery is complete, you will be taken to the post-operative recovery room, where you will remain until your vital signs stabilize completely and the anaesthesia has worn off.

To relieve post-surgical symptoms, you will be cared for by the medical staff, who will administer fluids and soft foods, as well as apply local ice to reduce inflammation and discomfort. They will also monitor you for any signs of bleeding or bruising in the area, until you are ready to be discharged—typically after a one-night hospital stay.

    Recovery after tympanoplasty surgery

Once at home, during the recovery period, you or your child may experience mild ear discomfort, occasional dizziness, facial numbness, or slight bleeding that may stain the bandage. These symptoms usually subside over the following days and can be managed with anti-inflammatory medication and antibiotics prescribed by the specialist.

Following discharge, you will need to return to the medical centre 5–7 days later to have the stitches removed.

Full recovery is usually achieved after approximately 15 days.

  • The main advantage of tympanoplasty surgery is that it repairs a perforated or ruptured eardrum, addressing associated problems such as infection, inflammation of the ear canal, and hearing loss.

It restores proper ear function and significantly improves the patient’s quality of life.

In addition to the specific benefits of the surgery itself, you should also consider the advantages offered by Operarme, which include:

    • A completely fixed, all-inclusive price with no hidden fees or last-minute surprises — we take care of everything for you.
    • Fully personalised patient support throughout the entire process.
    • Our ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) surgical specialists are highly experienced and renowned professionals in their field.

If you are considering tympanoplasty surgery with Operarme, you can request a free, immediate surgical assessment consultation via our website. You’ll be in expert hands, such as those of the Equipo de Otorrinolaringología del HLA Perpetuo Socorro.
