Information of Tonsil removal surgery (tonsillectomy) in Barcelona

  • Information about tonsil removal surgery in Barcelona

Tonsillectomy (tonsil removal surgery) in Barcelona with Operarme is performed by the ENT Team of Clínica Creu Blanca.

On this page we will explain step by step what the process of tonsillectomy surgery with us in Barcelona will be like if you decide to start it for yourself or, more usually, for your son or daughter.

  • The tonsils are an accumulation of lymphatic tissue located on both sides of the back of the throat, and their main function is to fight infections, especially during childhood, which is why tonsil removal surgery is more common in this age group than in adults, although tonsillectomy is also possible in adults.

Due to the function of the tonsils, there is a possibility that they may overdo their job and fight infections excessively, causing what is known as chronic tonsillitis, which is one of the main reasons why tonsillectomy is performed.

  • In order to carry out the surgery, the first thing to do is to request a free surgical assessment consultation with the ENT Team of Clínica Creu Blanca to get to know you, to review your case, to confirm that the intervention is necessary and to resolve any doubts you may have.

To request the consultation, you can do so through the website, by clicking on request appointment, by contacting our patient care team through the contact form or by calling directly to +34 91 141 33 56, we will be delighted to help you.

Once in the consultation room and after making the usual introductions, the ENT Team of Clínica Creu Blanca will ask you about the problem, if the tonsil infection is very common, in the case of children, if they miss a lot of school because of this problem, if it has already been diagnosed, previous surgeries, etc.

Similarly, he or she will ask about lifestyle habits and will perform an examination of the affected person's throat to determine whether or not a tonsillectomy is necessary.

We recommend that you consult the specialist with any doubts you may have in order to make an informed decision, which is usually the best way to make the right decision.

If you are convinced, at that very moment you can decide to go ahead with the operation and set the date with the ENT Team of Clínica Creu Blanca or on the other hand you can think about it in the following days, without pressure or commitment.

In any case, the day after the consultation our Patient Service Team will contact you to ask you how the consultation went, if the attention of the Specialists was good and if you definitely decide whether or not to go ahead with the tonsillectomy.

If so, your Operarme advisor will tell you the steps to follow in terms of payment and document management, which is very simple and is done telematically, and will also arrange the date of the pre-operative. If you have any questions or problems, your Operarme advisor will solve them, do not hesitate to contact her.

  • The surgery will take place in the Clinica Creu Blanca. Once there, the first thing you will have to do is to go to Admissions to hand in the necessary documentation for your discharge.

Don't worry, your personal patient service advisor will have told you what you need to bring with you.

Next, you will go to a room where you will wait briefly until you are called into surgery, stopping first in a room before the operating theatre where you will be given the clothes you will wear during the operation and where they will place the IV in your arm to keep you hydrated and administer the anaesthesia.

Once in the operating theatre you will meet the ENT Team of Clínica Creu Blanca, with whom you had the surgical assessment consultation, the anaesthetist and one or two members of the nursing team. You don't have to worry about the anaesthesia as you will be monitored at all times and it is a very quick surgery.

You will be positioned on the examination table as instructed by the surgeon and, once the anaesthetic has taken effect, the tonsillectomy operation will begin:

    1. The specialist will place a tool in the patient's mouth to keep it open during the operation.
    2. The specialist will then locate the tonsils and remove them with a scalpel, cauterising and closing the blood vessels with a tool called diathermy, which will allow faster natural healing without the need for stitches.
    3. Once this process has been completed, which as you can see is very quick, you will be woken up.

Tonsillectomy surgery is simple and short, lasting approximately 20 minutes.

  • After waking up from the anaesthetic, you'll go to a room where you'll recover for a while before you can go home the same day on your own two feet.

It's just a couple of hours, until you can breathe, cough and swallow easily. Before you leave, they will explain a little about what you can do and how to take care of yourself for the next few days, and then you can start your recovery at home.

    Recovery after tonsillectomy

Once at home after tonsillectomy, full recovery will be achieved around 10 to 14 days after surgery, although in children up to 5 years of age it is usually a little less.

In any case, we will try to answer some of the questions that patients often have in the postoperative period below:

    • What can you eat? Above all, it is important to stay hydrated with cold liquids. It is also advisable to eat cold foods, such as ice cream or jelly, and avoid foods that can tear the throat, such as crisps or toast.
    • Will it hurt? It is common to have some pain and discomfort in the area, and you are likely to feel it in your jaw, tongue, neck, throat and ears. Don't worry, it's common. While in young children it passes in less than a week, in adults and adolescents it can last up to 2 weeks. Talk to your ENT specialist about prescribing painkillers to relieve the discomfort as much as possible.
    • What are these white spots? A whitish-yellowish layer will form in the back of the throat after the operation. NOT TO WORRY, this is how the pharyngeal mucosa heals. During this time, it is also common for the uvula to be swollen, so don't worry.
    • What do I do if my throat bleeds? If there is bleeding, do not worry, it is not serious. Rinse with cold water for a few minutes and if the bleeding continues, expel it and contact your Specialist. This bleeding does not usually appear more than 10 days after the operation and occurs in very few cases.
    • When should I see a doctor? You should see a doctor if you have a high fever, if bleeding occurs and does not stop or if the pain cannot be tolerated even with painkillers.

In any case, it is normal for you to be fully recovered within 2 weeks, without having suffered any complications and noticing an improvement in the symptoms that led you to have the surgery.

  • In addition to the solution to the problem, the advantage of having a tonsillectomy surgery at Operarme is that it is an all-inclusive procedure, with no surprises at the end, the price that appears is what you will pay.

This cost includes everything necessary to carry out the operation as safely as possible, booking of the operating theatre, pre-operative, anaesthesia, medical fees, day hospital stay, etc.

We also include a complication insurance that covers possible mishaps such as the need for an overnight stay, among others. If you would like to know more about the latter, please contact us, we will be delighted to help you.

On the other hand, in Barcelona surgery is performed in the Clinica Creu Blanca and is carried out by the ENT Team of Clínica Creu Blanca.
