    Make an appointment

Once the appointment has been requested, our consultants will contact you to confirm that the date and time of the appointment is convenient for you and to answer any questions you may have about the process, if necessary.

On the day of the appointment, the Equipo de Otorrinolaringología del Hospital Parque San Francisco will begin the interview by asking you about the problem, the discomfort caused by turbinate hypertrophy, other symptoms or problems caused by the increase in the size of the structure.

Similarly, the doctor will ask you about your lifestyle and perform an examination of the nasal passages to determine whether or not radiofrequency Turbinoplasty is necessary.

To obtain a more accurate and personalised diagnosis, it is recommended that you bring all the medical tests you have, provided you have had any previously performed.

  • Normally, the time you will have to wait from the assessment appointment with the specialist until the time of the intervention is approximately 7 to 10 days, depending directly on the availability of the operating theatre and the need for a pre-operative period.

During the preoperative, you will undergo various tests such as:

    • Electrocardiogram: This test allows the surgeon and anaesthetist to know your cardiovascular health.
    • Blood test: The purpose of this test is to determine that you do not have any abnormalities or pathologies, such as infections, which may delay surgery until it is under control.
    • Chest x-ray: This is a test that is only performed if the doctor determines it necessary, to ensure that you do not have an infection and that your trachea is correctly aligned, in case you require intubation.

    Anaesthesia consultation

After attending the pre-operative, you will be called to the consultation with the anaesthesiologist who will perform the surgery. He will explain the type of anaesthesia that will be used in the operation, being in the case of radiofrequency turbinate surgery, normally, with local anaesthesia or in particular cases with endotracheal sedation.

You should also provide information about your habits, such as smoking, alcohol consumption, diet, medication, etc. In this way, all the variables can be controlled so that the operation can be carried out without complications.

  • On the day of the turbinate surgery by radiofrequency at the Hospital Parque San Francisco, you will pass through admission, hand in the necessary documentation and arrive at the room where you will prepare for the surgery.

Once in the operating theatre you will meet the Equipo de Otorrinolaringología del Hospital Parque San Francisco, the anaesthetist and one or two members of the nursing team.

You don't have to worry about the anaesthesia as you will be monitored at all times and it is a very quick surgery.

After you have been positioned on the stretcher as instructed by the surgeon, the surgery will begin:

    • You will be given a local anaesthetic to numb the area.
    • After the anaesthesia has taken effect, the surgeon will insert the tip of a terminal (with a needle tip) through the nostrils and puncture the head (front) of the inferior turbinate.
    • The tip is connected to a radiofrequency device that transmits energy to the turbinate tissue to reduce the volume of the turbinates, making room for air to enter through the nostrils.
    • Once the size of the turbinates has been reduced, the surgeon will remove the instrument from the nasal cavity and you will be taken to the recovery room to recover from the anaesthesia.
    • Once you have recovered from the effects of the anaesthesia and the surgeon has checked that everything has gone well, you can leave the hospital.

The time you will spend in the operating theatre will be between 15 and 20 minutes, although this can be varied if you have any particularities, such as larger than normal dimensions, which would entail a longer stay in the operating theatre.

Post-surgery at the Hospital Parque San Francisco

After surgery, you will spend some time in the post-surgical ward until you have fully recovered from the anaesthesia.

Once the anaesthesia has worn off (between 3 and 5 hours after the intervention), you can leave the hospital.

Before you leave, the specialist will explain the care you should follow at home during your recovery, as well as answer any questions you may have about healing and the appearance of the first signs of improvement.

  • Once at home, recovery is quick and easy. This healing stage is usually completed 10-15 days after surgery, although in most cases you may notice improvement after several days.

Here are some of the most common guidelines to follow during the recovery process:

    • Healing and hygiene of the area: you should wash your nose with physiological saline solution or saline water to promote healing and keep the treated area clean.
    • Activities to avoid: it is important during the first few days after surgery to avoid physical exercise, intense heat (saunas, very hot showers, etc.) and taking aspirin. In this way you can prevent more serious complications such as abundant nosebleeds.
    • Taking medication: it is common to feel some discomfort and small aches and pains in the face or head after surgery. Don't worry, your doctor can prescribe painkillers for the first few days, helping you to reduce these post-operative symptoms.
  • The most obvious benefit of reducing the nasal turbinates is to eliminate nasal obstruction, that is to say, to correct the defect, giving you back your daily normality and restoring your quality of life.
