Information of Adenoidectomy (adenoids removal) in Elche

  • Information about adenoidectomy (removal of adenoids) in Elche

Adenoidectomy in Elche with Operarme is performed in the Hospital IMED Elche by the ENT Team of IMED Elche.

Below, you can find all the information you need about the procedure, from adenoid enlargement to recovery and advantages of adenoidectomy.

  • Adenoids are lymphoid follicles located in the upper part of the pharynx. This formation generates antibodies to fight infections and help our body's immune system from birth. Generally, adenoids grow until we reach the age of 4 and then decrease in size during adolescence.

When this accumulation is very large, it can block the passage of air from the nasal cavity to the larynx, causing the need to breathe through the mouth as a compensatory mechanism. From this situation onwards, it is very possible to develop complications such as otitis, repeated respiratory tract infections, bronchitis, snoring, etc.

  • The first step you should take, to get to know them and explain your child's or your own case, is to request a free surgical assessment consultation through Operarme. You can do this by clicking on Request appointment, contacting our Patient Service Team via the contact form or by calling at +34 91 141 33 56

    Make an appointment

Once the appointment has been requested, our consultants will contact you to confirm that the date and time of the appointment is convenient for you and to answer any questions you may have about the process.

Once everything has been confirmed, all that remains is for you to go to the consultation with the ENT Team of IMED Elche on the day indicated and you can find the best solution for adenoid hypertrophy.

On the day of your appointment with the ENT Team of IMED Elche, depending on who you see that day, the specialist will begin the medical interview, in which he or she will ask you about any discomfort you may feel due to inflammation of the adenoids, pain or other problems caused by adenoiditis. The doctor will also perform a physical examination of the area, which will help determine whether or not the operation is necessary and conclude the diagnosis.

We recommend that you bring all the medical tests you have, so that the specialist can give you a much more personalised and accurate diagnosis of your child's case or your own.

In the event that after consultation with the ENT Team of IMED Elche, it is determined that the pathology that you or your child suffers from is adenoid hypertrophy and surgery is totally indicated. It will be up to you to decide to have surgery with the ENT Team of IMED Elche. If so, you will be able to arrange the dates of the pre-operative and the adenoidectomy surgery at the Hospital IMED Elche on the same day.

After the surgical assessment appointment, one of our patient care advisors will contact you to ask you how everything went during the consultation and, if necessary, to confirm the date of the operation and the postoperative period.

They will also inform you about what you need to do to go ahead with the procedure. We insist that our consultants are at your disposal to answer any questions you may have and to guide you through the whole process.

  • The surgery will take place at the Hospital IMED Elche. Once there, the first thing you will have to do is go to admissions and hand in the necessary documentation for discharge. Don't worry, our patient service team will inform you on what you need to bring with you.

    • Electrocardiogram: this allows the doctor and anaesthetist to know the patient's cardiovascular health and thus determine whether or not he/she is fit for surgery.
    • Blood test: this test determines whether or not there is an infection in the body, in which case it must be checked before the operation.
    • Chest x-ray: a chest x-ray is only performed when indicated by the doctor and allows to completely rule out signs of infection.

    Anaesthesia consultation

During the consultation, the anaesthesiologist will review your pre-operative results and ask you a series of questions about your lifestyle, medication, previous surgeries, etc. It is important to point out any additional supplements that the patient is taking so that he/she can take them into account.

  • Adenoidectomy surgery in Elche with Operarme is performed in the Hospital IMED Elche by the ENT Team of IMED Elche.

On the day of the operation, you will be taken to the operating theatre, where you will meet the surgeon with whom you had your consultation, the anaesthetist and a member of the nursing team. Once on the operating table, the surgery will begin:

    1. First, the anaesthetist will place a line in your arm through which the anaesthetic will be administered, or you will be fitted with a mask through which you will inhale the anaesthetic.
    2. After the anaesthetic takes effect, the surgeon will place a small tool in your mouth to keep it open during surgery.
    3. The specialist will then remove the adenoid glands with a curette or curette, a spoon-shaped surgical instrument that allows the tissue to be removed. A tool may also be used to help cut the soft tissue. In addition, some surgeons use electrical techniques that heat the tissue, remove it and stop the bleeding, a method known as electrocautery. Another method uses radiofrequency energy in the same way as the previous technique, this method is called coblation.
    4. Finally, absorbent compresses are placed over the operated area to stop any bleeding and to be able to observe whether the extraction has been carried out correctly.

The duration of adenoidectomy is approximately 15-20 minutes.

  • After the adenoidectomy surgery is completed, you will be taken to the post-surgery ward until your vital signs are fully restored and the anaesthesia has been cleared from your body. Once the anaesthesia has worn off and the specialists are sure that you can cough, swallow and breathe easily, you will be able to leave the hospital on your own.

Please note that before you leave, you will be given guidelines to follow during the healing process until you make a full recovery.

    Recovery after adenoidectomy

After discharge from hospital, at home, full recovery will be achieved after 1-2 weeks. During the recovery period, you or your child may experience nasal congestion, nasal drainage and sore throat, which are completely common and disappear following medical care.

The following are the most important things to take care of during the recovery period:

    • Diet: after surgery it is very important that you start by consuming plenty of fluids, preferably cold, and soft foods. Proper hydration will help healing and you will be able to include more solid foods as you are able to tolerate them, normally several days after the operation.
    • Activities: avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting or sports activities, at least until after the first postoperative week.
    • Reduce nausea or vomiting: after the operation, the larynx and palate may feel more sensitive than normal, so contact with food may cause nausea or even vomiting. Don't worry, your specialist will prescribe medication for nausea and to prevent vomiting.
    • Healing: the adenoids are located close to the nose, so during healing it is possible to detect bad breath due to the crust on the nose.
    • Voice changes: during the healing phase your voice may sound higher pitched, but over the days it will gradually return to normal.
    • See a doctor if: you have a high fever, if bleeding occurs and does not stop, or if the pain cannot be tolerated even with painkillers.
  • In addition to the obvious benefit of removing the adenoids, solving the respiratory problem, giving you back your daily normality and recovering your quality of life.
