02. How is Lasik Surgery for myopia performed?

Myopia is a visual defect that causes images captured by the eye to be projected before the retina, resulting in blurred images. In this case, unlike farsightedness, the problem is that the eye is unable to focus on distant objects.

There are two types of myopia according to the number of dioptres that the patient has. Depending on this number, lasik surgery will be viable to treat the patient’s myopia: the patient must present between 1 and 8 dioptres to be able to benefit from LASIK treatment.

The intervention of laser myopia with LASIK is a common surgery nowadays to treat myopia problems. This surgical treatment is outpatient, meaning that the patient leaves the hospital right after the surgery, which lasts less than half an hour.

Myopia surgery with LASIK laser is a minor surgery that is performed under topical anaesthesia and lasts 15 to 20 minutes (per eye).

These are the steps the surgeon takes to perform a LASIK Surgery:

  • First of all, topical anaesthesia will be given to the patient. Afterwards, the patient is advised to keep the eye closed to prevent it from drying out due to loss of sensation.
  • Before starting the intervention, the patient is placed in a surgical gurney and the surgeon covers his/her face with a surgical blanket, except the eye to be intervened. In this same eye, the staff will place an instrument that will keep the eye open throughout the intervention.
  • The surgeon starts by disinfecting the eye with saline solution. Right after, the patient will feel a bit of pressure in the eye, and even in some occasions, lose part of the vision.
  • The next step is to lift the superficial layer covering the cornea with an instrument called microkeratome, so the laser acts directly on the corneal bed. This layer will remain attached to the eye at one end for the duration of the procedure.
  • Next, the surgeon will ask the patient to fix his/her sight in a luminous point of the laser. This step is quite important since the efficiency of the intervention depends on it. When the surgeon activates the laser, the patient won’t be able to see for less than a minute.
  • Finally, the ophthalmologist will wash the cornea and place the corneal layer in its position, without the need to suture.

The intervention for Myopia with Laser (LASIK surgery) lasts between 15 and 20 minutes.

03. Post-operative of Myopia with Laser (LASIK surgery)

Once the surgery is finished, the patient is able to return home on their own. Being a minimally invasive surgery, a postoperative admission is not necessary.

The doctor will give the patient a report with all the guidelines to follow for the healing of the eye. During the first day after the surgery, it is recommended that the patient remains at home.

After the intervention the patient won’t be feeling any pain, just discomfort like stinging, tearing and discomfort from light for about 6 hours after the surgery.

Recovery after laser myopia surgery (with LASIK) takes place gradually over the days following the surgery, with a noticeable improvement in vision within 48 hours.

During the month following the surgery, the patient must attend the stipulated follow-up visits, starting the first one the day after the surgery.

04. Advantages of Myopia with Laser (LASIK surgery)

The main advantage of laser surgery for myopia (lasik surgery) is the correction of the problem and the consecutive independence from the use of glasses or contact lenses to see. Another advantage is that this surgery is a quick, painless procedure with a rapid recovery.
