02. How is Cataracts Surgery performed?
Cataracts surgery with multifocal lens is a major surgery that is performed under topical anesthesia and lasts 15 to 20 minutes (per eye).
Below we explain the surgical process of total cataracts surgery with multifocal lens:
- Administration of topical anesthesia around the eye (you will be awake, but you will not feel anything at all).
- Incision of 2 - 3 mm in the cornea
- Ultrasound delivery to the lens of the eye
- Extraction of the liquid that remains after dissolution
- Introduction of the multifocal intraocular lens
As it is a minimally invasive surgery, it is not necessary to perform sutures. It is one of the advantages of the phacoemulsification technique.

Recovery from cataracts surgery with multifocal lens
Once the surgery is finished, you will be able to return home on your own. Being a minimally invasive surgery, a postoperative admission is not necessary.
The doctor will give you a report with all the guidelines to follow for the healing of the eye.
The following day and during the first month after the intervention, the patient will attend visits to the clinic for eye care. During the first day after the surgery, it is recommended that the patient remains at home.
In the days following the procedure, the patient will notice some stinging in the eyes, which will resolve with time and with the use of the artificial tears. It will also be necessary to wear sunglasses for the first few weeks as well as a plastic occluder to avoid scratching the eye.
03. Advantages of Cataracts Surgery with Multifocal Lens
The main advantage of Cataracts surgery with a multifocal lens is solving blurred vision problems caused by cataracts. Regarding the advantages of using multifocal lenses instead of single vision lenses, it is important to mention that multifocal intraocular lenses allow the patient to get by without glasses in most situations, recovering long and short distance vision with a very high quality. Glasses will only be necessary for tasks that require high precision or in situations where there is little light.
