NOT Included - Medical prescription
In Spain, a medical prescription is required for any diagnostic test. If you do not have one, you will need to see a specialist beforehand to obtain one.
Below, we explain the process step by step, whether you have it or not:
If you have a medical prescription
- Purchase the test as normal.
- Immediately afterwards, we will send you the instructions for you to send us the medical prescription to the e-mail address you used to make the purchase, so that we can manage the appointment.
- With the medical prescription we will be able to check that the diagnostic test purchased corresponds to the one indicated by the specialist.
- We will arrange your appointment with a date and time so that you can go to the hospital of your choice to undergo the test.
You don't have a medical prescription
If you do not have a medical prescription, Operarme will arrange a consultation with one of our specialists at a preferential price (subject to availability in the area). Contact us for more information.
During the consultation you will be able to inform the doctor about the test you need. He/she may ask you for a report in relation to your medical problem, if the test you need to have requires it.
If you do not have a prescription or report associated with the reason for the diagnostic test, it is likely that you will be referred to a face-to-face consultation. If this is your case, contact us for advice on how to proceed.
Remember: on the day of the test you must bring and show the Operarme voucher and the medical prescription.
-
Refund if test is not carried out
If after purchasing the test you decide not to take it or the date of the appointment does not suit your needs, you can request a refund. In these cases, we will refund you the full amount of your purchase without any problem.
To do so, please contact our Patient Service Team before the date of the appointment, and we will manage the refund quickly and easily.

If you have been prescribed a shoulder MRI with contrast, you can book the service with Operarme for 395 € and identify any injuries or conditions affecting the shoulder joint, so your doctor can determine the most appropriate treatment.
What should you take into account before purchasing the MRI service?
A medical referral is required to undergo an MRI scan. If you do not have one, you can contact our Patient Service team on +34 91 141 33 56 so they can arrange a phone appointment with one of our doctors and help you obtain your referral.
Once you purchase the test, you will receive an email with the voucher, invoice and all the necessary information. Our team will then contact you to arrange the date and time of your hospital appointment.
On the day of the MRI, you must bring your medical referral. If you attend without it, the centre may refer you for a private consultation so that a doctor can assess the need for the MRI and issue the referral. However, this consultation is not included in the price of the shoulder MRI with contrast booked through Operarme, and its cost may be higher than the preferential rate offered to Operarme patients.
If you need a different type of MRI scan, you can visit our diagnostic tests section and choose the option that best suits your needs(brain MRI, spine MRI, two-region MRI, MRI with contrast, etc).
If you have any questions, you can contact our Patient Service team on +34 91 141 33 56 or complete the contact form, and we will get in touch with you as soon as possible.

How is a shoulder MRI with contrast performed in Elche?
On the day of your MRI at the Hospital IMED Elche, you will be taken to the room where the scan is carried out. You will be given a gown to change into and asked to remove any metal objects you are wearing. Then, following the medical team’s instructions, you will lie on a movable table that slides into the MRI scanner, and a small amount of gadolinium (contrast) will be administered intravenously. It is normal to feel a warm or cold sensation at the injection site, but this does not cause any pain.
The technician will explain how you should position yourself on the table so that clear images can be obtained and will monitor the progress of the scan from another room.
During the examination, it is common to hear loud noises, such as tapping or other sounds, so the medical team may provide earplugs or even play music to help block the noise.
If you feel discomfort or claustrophobia, medication can be given to help you relax. In addition, you will usually have access to a button to alert the technician if you feel overwhelmed or anxious. However, there is no need to worry, as the vast majority of people complete the scan without difficulty.
A shoulder MRI with contrast does not usually require prior preparation, but there are a few recommendations you should take into account, which are outlined below.
In some cases, when the scan is performed with contrast, you may need to fast for a minimum of 6 hours; this instruction will be provided by your doctor when prescribing the test.
What should you know before having an MRI at the Hospital IMED Elche?
- Generally, fasting is not required; if it is necessary at the specialist’s explicit request, your doctor will inform you when the test is prescribed.
- Avoid attending with metal objects such as jewellery, keys, watches or electronic devices.
- It is important to attend the scan wearing loose, comfortable clothing.
- It is also very important to inform the medical team if you have a pacemaker or any other type of metal implant.
How long does a shoulder MRI with contrast take?
A shoulder MRI with contrast generally lasts between 20 and 30 minutes, depending on the area being examined; in more complex cases, it may take up to 1 hour.
