NOT Included - Medical prescription
In Spain, a medical prescription is required for any diagnostic test. If you do not have one, you will need to see a specialist beforehand to obtain one.
Below, we explain the process step by step, whether you have it or not:
If you have a medical prescription
- Purchase the test as normal.
- Immediately afterwards, we will send you the instructions for you to send us the medical prescription to the e-mail address you used to make the purchase, so that we can manage the appointment.
- With the medical prescription we will be able to check that the diagnostic test purchased corresponds to the one indicated by the specialist.
- We will arrange your appointment with a date and time so that you can go to the hospital of your choice to undergo the test.
You don't have a medical prescription
If you do not have a medical prescription, Operarme will arrange a consultation with one of our specialists at a preferential price (subject to availability in the area). Contact us for more information.
During the consultation you will be able to inform the doctor about the test you need. He/she may ask you for a report in relation to your medical problem, if the test you need to have requires it.
If you do not have a prescription or report associated with the reason for the diagnostic test, it is likely that you will be referred to a face-to-face consultation. If this is your case, contact us for advice on how to proceed.
Remember: on the day of the test you must bring and show the Operarme voucher and the medical prescription.
-
Refund if test is not carried out
If after purchasing the test you decide not to take it or the date of the appointment does not suit your needs, you can request a refund. In these cases, we will refund you the full amount of your purchase without any problem.
To do so, please contact our Patient Service Team before the date of the appointment, and we will manage the refund quickly and easily.

01. What does a Shoulder MRI with contrast involve?
A Shoulder MRI is a non-invasive test that allows detailed visualisation of the structures inside the shoulder joint in order to detect any injury, condition or serious disorder affecting the joint.
Contrast is a technique that helps visualise internal structures of the body more clearly. It involves a liquid known as gadolinium, which is administered intravenously before the MRI scan begins.
This medication accumulates in certain tissues and temporarily alters their electromagnetic properties, allowing more defined images to be obtained during the scan. The contrast agent is usually eliminated through the urine within 24 hours of administration.
What can a shoulder MRI with contrast detect?
- Detection of tumours in the shoulder.
- Diagnosis of joint or bone injuries that restrict shoulder movement.
- Diagnosis of injuries or tears in the rotator cuff.
- Assessment of fractures.
- Infections, acute pain or bleeding affecting the tissues of the shoulder joint.

02. How is a shoulder MRI with contrast performed?
On the day of the scan, the patient puts on a gown and removes any metal objects they are wearing. They then lie on a movable table that slides into the MRI scanner, and a small amount of gadolinium (contrast) is administered intravenously. It is common to feel a warm or cold sensation at the injection site, but this does not cause pain.
The technician explains how the patient should position themselves on the table to ensure clear images are obtained and monitors the progress of the scan from another room.
During the examination, it is common to hear loud noises, such as tapping or other sounds, so the medical team may provide earplugs or even play music to help block the noise.
If the patient experiences discomfort or claustrophobia, medication can be administered to help them relax. In addition, patients usually have access to a button to alert the technician if they feel overwhelmed or anxious. However, most people complete a shoulder MRI with contrast without difficulty.
A Shoulder MRI does not usually require prior preparation, but there are a few recommendations you should take into account, which are outlined below.
In some cases, if the scan is performed with contrast, the patient may need to fast for at least 6 hours; this instruction will be provided by the doctor when prescribing the test.
What should you know before having an MRI?
- Generally, fasting is not required; if it is necessary at the specialist’s explicit request, the patient will be informed when the test is prescribed.
- Avoid attending with metal objects such as jewellery, keys, watches or electronic devices.
- It is important to attend the scan wearing loose, comfortable clothing.
- It is also very important to inform the medical team if the patient has a pacemaker or any metal implant.
How long does a shoulder MRI with contrast take?
A shoulder MRI with contrast generally lasts between 20 and 30 minutes, depending on the area being examined; in more complex cases, it may take up to 1 hour.
