Information of Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) Test - Ovarian Reserve in Lugo

  • Everything you need to know about the Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) test – ovarian reserve

The Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) test is used as a female fertility assessment, as it helps estimate the likelihood of a woman becoming pregnant.

In addition, this test is used to anticipate how a woman may respond to assisted reproductive treatments such as in vitro fertilization, artificial insemination, and similar methods. It can also help determine whether egg donation may be necessary. Likewise, it provides valuable information for women who wish to preserve their eggs through cryopreservation before their ovarian reserve is depleted, allowing them the possibility of becoming pregnant with their own eggs in the future.

    When is this test recommended?

This exam is performed by measuring the concentration of Anti-Müllerian Hormone in a blood sample through a blood test. The sample can be taken at any time during the menstrual cycle, as AMH levels are not affected by the use of contraceptives.

A high ovarian reserve suggests a greater likelihood of achieving pregnancy. A woman is born with approximately one million eggs, a number that decreases to about 300,000 by the time she reaches puberty.

From the age of 35, the ovarian reserve begins to decline progressively.

For a more detailed assessment of the ovarian reserve, an ultrasound is performed and compared with the AMH test results. A woman is considered to have a normal ovarian reserve when she has around 10 follicles in both ovaries. If there are more than 20 follicles in both ovaries, the reserve is classified as high, while a low ovarian reserve is diagnosed when there are fewer than 8 to 10 follicles in both ovaries.

Who is the Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) Test for?

The ovarian reserve, assessed through the Anti-Müllerian Hormone, provides information about the number of eggs available in a woman’s ovaries, which is directly related to her ability to conceive. Therefore, this test is useful for:

    • Those who want to know the number of eggs in their ovaries.
    • Those who wish to estimate their chances of becoming pregnant.
    • Women who want to predict the effectiveness of fertility treatments.
    • Women interested in knowing if they are approaching menopause.

    Where is the sample collected?

Blood and genital sample collection is carried out at Eurofins-Megalab Laboratories, which have over 80 laboratories and collaborate with more than 1,000 collection points throughout the country.
