Everything you need to know about obstetric curettage in Barcelona
Obstetric curettage, also known as uterine curettage, is a gynaecological technique involving the scraping of tissue from the inner walls of the uterus, with the aim of removing its mucosal lining, known as the endometrium.
With Operarme, you can undergo this procedure at the Clinica Creu Blanca in Barcelona. Below, you will find all the information about this procedure, which is typically indicated following a miscarriage, as well as how to manage the entire process through our website.
Obstetric curettage is a minor surgical procedure performed under local or mild general anaesthesia by a specialist in gynaecology. The procedure typically lasts around 15 minutes.
During the surgery, cells from the inner lining of the uterus—known as the endometrium—are removed. This layer has the natural ability to regenerate with each menstrual cycle.
Obstetric curettage is mainly indicated following a miscarriage.
This procedure is usually carried out in the following situations:
- Spontaneous miscarriage: Curettage is used to empty the uterus in cases of incomplete or missed miscarriage—when the embryo has died but has not been naturally expelled through bleeding.
- Induced or therapeutic abortions: Curettage is a common method used to terminate a pregnancy during the first or second trimester, either due to a personal decision, risks to the mother's health, or the presence of severe malformations or genetic abnormalities in the embryo.

How is obstetric curettage performed after pregnancy termination?
Obstetric curettage, or uterine curettage, is a straightforward procedure that, as mentioned earlier, typically lasts around 15 minutes.
To carry out this intervention, local or mild general anaesthesia is administered to the patient to ensure she feels no discomfort or pain during the procedure.
The steps involved in obstetric curettage are as follows:
- Once everything is ready and you are in the operating theatre, you will be asked to lie on the surgical table in the position indicated by the specialist. The anaesthetist will then administer the anaesthesia.
- After the anaesthesia takes effect, the first step is dilation. This involves opening the entrance of the uterus to allow the curettage instruments to be introduced. To do this, the specialist will gently insert small metal rods through the cervix, gradually widening it until the appropriate opening size is achieved.
- Next, once dilation is complete, the curettage is performed: a thin rod, known as a curette (an instrument with a small loop at the end), is inserted. Using this instrument, the gynaecologist removes the endometrial tissue through the cervix.
- Once all the tissue has been removed, the instruments are withdrawn, and the procedure is complete.
After the surgery, you will be taken to a recovery room until you are ready to be discharged. You will then return home with full post-operative care instructions.

Post-operative care after obstetric curettage
After a curettage, it is common to experience vaginal bleeding for the next 10 to 15 days. However, this is not menstrual bleeding. Your normal period is expected to return approximately 30 to 40 days after the procedure.
You may also notice abdominal discomfort or pelvic pain. To relieve these symptoms, it is advisable to rest and take painkillers.
Despite this, recovery after the procedure is usually very quick, and you can return to your normal routine the day after the intervention.
However, it is important to follow a few recommendations:
- Avoid sexual intercourse for at least two weeks after the curettage
- Do not use tampons
- Do not perform vaginal douching or take baths
- Avoid intense physical exercise
