01. Everything you need to know about Obstetric Curettage
Obstetric curettage, also known as uterine curettage, is a gynaecological procedure that involves the scraping of tissue from the inner walls of the uterus.
The aim is to remove the mucosal lining of the uterus, known as the endometrium.
Obstetric curettage is a minor surgical procedure performed under local or mild general anaesthesia by a specialist in gynaecology. The procedure typically lasts around 15 minutes.
During the surgery, cells from the inner lining of the uterus—known as the endometrium—are removed. This layer has the natural ability to regenerate with each menstrual cycle.
Obstetric curettage is mainly indicated following a miscarriage.
This procedure is usually carried out in the following situations:
- Spontaneous miscarriage: Curettage is used to empty the uterus in cases of incomplete or missed miscarriage—when the embryo has died but has not been naturally expelled through bleeding.
- Induced or therapeutic abortions: Curettage is a common method used to terminate a pregnancy during the first or second trimester, either due to a personal decision, risks to the mother's health, or the presence of severe malformations or genetic abnormalities in the embryo.

02. How is obstetric curettage performed after pregnancy termination?
Obstetric curettage, or uterine curettage, is a straightforward procedure that, as previously mentioned, usually takes around 15 minutes.
To carry out the intervention, either local anaesthesia or mild general anaesthesia is administered to ensure the patient feels no discomfort or pain during the surgery.
The procedure involves the following steps:
- Once everything is ready and you are in the operating theatre, you will be positioned on the examination table as instructed by the specialist. The anaesthetist will then proceed with the administration of the anaesthesia.
- Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, the first step is dilation. This involves gently opening the entrance of the uterus to allow for the introduction of the curettage instruments. The gynaecologist will insert a series of small metal rods through the cervix, gradually widening it until it reaches the appropriate size.
- Next comes the curettage itself: a thin instrument known as a curette (a rod with a small loop at the end) is carefully inserted through the cervix. Using the curette, the gynaecologist scrapes and removes the endometrial tissue from the uterine lining.
- Once all the tissue has been removed, the instruments are withdrawn and the procedure is considered complete.
After the surgery, you will be taken to a recovery room until you are ready to be discharged. You will then return home with full post-operative care instructions.
03. Post-operative care after obstetric curettage
Following a curettage, it is common to experience vaginal bleeding for 10 to 15 days. However, this is not a menstrual period. Your regular menstrual cycle is expected to return approximately 30 to 40 days after the procedure.
You may also notice abdominal discomfort or pelvic pain. To ease these symptoms, it is advisable to rest and take appropriate pain relief medication.
Despite this, recovery after the procedure is generally quick, and most patients are able to resume their normal daily activities the following day. However, it is important to follow certain recommendations, including:
- Abstain from sexual intercourse for at least two weeks after the procedure.
- Do not use tampons.
- Avoid vaginal douching or taking baths.
- Refrain from intense physical exercise.
