Laparoscopic Tubal Ligation is a minor surgery that is performed under general anaesthesia and lasts 30-40 minutes.

These are the steps the surgeon takes to perform a Laparoscopic Tubal Ligation:

• First of all, general anaesthesia will be given to the patient, meaning that the patient stays asleep throughout the procedure.
• After the anaesthesia has taken effect, the surgeon will make a small incision of about 10 mm at or below the navel and insert the optics with a television camera attached.
• During surgery, thanks to the camera, the surgeon will be able to see, through the monitor, the inside of the abdominal cavity, the fallopian tube and the ovaries.
• To improve visibility, the specialist will inflate the abdomen with gas (CO2).
• Later, the surgeon will make a second incision (about 5mm), above the pubis, to introduce a bipolar coagulation clamp. 
• The specialist will grasp the tube with the bipolar clamp, and 3-4 burn-coagulation stitches in each fallopian tube to seal the duct.
• Once the sealing of the fallopian tube has been completed, the laparoscope is removed.
• The surgeon places stitches in the incisions to finish the procedure.
• At the end of the surgery, the patient will be taken to the recovery room to recover from the anaesthesia. 

Tube Ligation is performed under general anaesthesia, and it usually takes between 30-40 minutes.

Once in her private room, the patient will stay for the night in the hospital. Thanks to the minimally invasive technique, the patient can be discharged from the hospital earlier due to reduced bleeding.

Post-surgery recovery after laparoscopy surgery is mainly characterised for being faster and manageable.

The patient always needs to follow the medical instructions given after discharge:

• The patient can have a bath 48h after the surgery. Carefully dry the incision after bathing.
• Avoid straining or rubbing the incision: avoid heavy lifting, physical efforts and sexual relationships until the surgeon informs the patient that it’s safe to do so.
• Gradually resume daily activities always under doctor’s indications.
• Stitches will dissolve and won’t be necessary to remove them.

Return to work takes place within a few days. Stitches may dissolve in 10-12 days after surgery.

The benefit of tubal sterilisation is clear: it is > 99% effective in protecting against pregnancy. It is also a permanent and, in most cases, an irreversible procedure.
