02. How is Hysteroscopic Myomectomy Surgery performed?

Hysteroscopic Myomectomy is a minimal invasive procedure in which benign neoplasms, such as uterine fibroids or tumours, without the need of completely removing the uterus.

In fact, this intervention is recommended in patients who do not want to lose the possibility of conceiving.

Since this technique does not imply making big incisions, recovery after surgery is faster than the conventional technique, in which it is necessary to make an incision in the abdomen.

Hysteroscopy is a new technique which achieves removing tumours in the uterus. Using a laser, the specialist opens the pseudocapsule in the fibroid to vaporise the tissues and coagulate the blood vessels that feed it.

Through this technique, the gynecologist introduces the hysteroscope and visualises the interior of the uterus. Being a minimal invasive technique, the fibroids are removed completely, leaving the uterus intact.

When a patient makes the decision of having surgery for the removal of fibroids via hysteroscopic myomectomy, it’s important to take into account a few steps previous to the surgery in order for it to be performed as safely and effectively as possible. We’re going to explain below step by step how hysteroscopic myomectomy surgery is carried out at Operarme.

First of all, the patient has been previously diagnosed with benign fibroids or tumours in the uterus, and needs myomectomy surgery to remove them, so the patient books a surgical assessment consultation with one of our general surgeons, through our website.

You can ask for an appointment by clicking on the “Make an appointment” button, calling at +34 91 141 33 56 or filling our contact form here.

Once the patient has attended the appointment and the surgeon has confirmed the intervention and technique, our patient service team will contact her to inform about the schedule and coming appointments of the patient’s surgical procedure.

Hysteroscopic Myomectomy Surgery is a minor surgery that is performed under general anaesthesia and lasts 30 minutes.

These are the steps the surgeon takes to perform a Hysteroscopic Myomectomy Surgery:

  • First of all, general anaesthesia will be given to the patient, meaning that the patient stays asleep throughout the procedure.
  • The surgeon starts by dilating the cervix to access the cavity.
  • Then the surgeon introduces the hysteroscope through the vagina and the cervix to reach the uterus. Usually a wire loop resectoscope is used to remove the tissue with electricity, or a hysteroscopic morcellator is used to remove the tissue manually.
  • Next, the surgeon places a sterile saline solution in the uterus to expand the cavity and allow examination of the uterine walls.
  • The specialist uses the resectoscope or hysteroscopic morcellator to extract the layers of the fibroids and remove them completely.
  • The fragments of the fibroid are taken for analysis and obtain pathological information on the neoplasm.
  • At the end of the surgery, the patient will be taken to the recovery room to recover from the anaesthesia.

The intervention for Hysteroscopic Myomectomy Surgery lasts 30 minutes.

03. Post-operative of a Hysteroscopic Myomectomy surgery

Once in her private room, the patient will stay for the night in the hospital. Thanks to the minimally invasive technique, the patient can be discharged from the hospital earlier due to reduced bleeding and incision.

After the doctor’s decision to discharge the patient, she will be able to return home. Once the inpatient has been given the discharge report, she can request the transfer service offered on our services.

The complete recovery time of the Hysteroscopic Myomectomy Surgery is estimated in 7 days.

04. Advantages of Myomectomy Surgery via Hysteroscopy

The surgery used to treat a fibroid situation was generally hysterectomy, a radical surgery in which, in addition to removing the fibroids, the uterus is also removed.

Advances in technology have given medicine minimal invasive techniques for less radical but equally effective treatments. In the case of hysteroscopy, it is a technique that allows women suffering from fibroids to be treated without the need to remove the uterus, thus maintaining fertility.

More advantages of this intervention are the reduction of hospitalisation, less pain and discomfort, less risk of complications and infections after surgery, less bleeding, and a faster recovery post-surgery.
