Information of Hymenoplasty (hymen reconstruction surgery) in Marbella

  • Everything you need to know about hymenoplasty in Marbella

The hymen is a connective tissue membrane located at the entrance of the vagina, partially covering the vaginal cavity while allowing the passage of fluids and menstruation.

The hymen is a characteristic of female virginity and has historically held great cultural significance. Therefore, its loss can represent a sociocultural issue. To prevent and, to some extent, resolve the problem of a torn hymen, there is a technique that reconstructs this membrane — hymenoplasty.

In Marbella, hymen reconstruction surgery is performed by the Gynecology Team of Clinica Premium at the Clinica Premium.

Below, we explain all the details about hymen reconstruction surgery, the benefits of this procedure, and how to manage the entire process through Operarme.

  • For most women today, the hymen may seem insignificant; however, there are several cases where it plays an important role, especially within social, cultural, and religious contexts. The main reasons for seeking this treatment are:

The hymen is a fibrous and elastic tissue that usually tears during the first sexual intercourse, although it can sometimes break due to trauma.

    • To arrive at marriage as a virgin. Women from the Roma community and those whose religion is Islam often face pressure to remain virgins until marriage. For them, preserving the hymen or undergoing hymenoplasty becomes an obligation to protect their honour and integrity.
    • In some cases, women choose to symbolically offer their virginity to their new partner, which is why they opt for hymenoplasty.
    • Some women who have suffered sexual assault decide to undergo this procedure as a way to regain a sense of control over their bodies.
  • Finding an effective solution for a torn hymen can take time and may involve several steps along the way. For this reason, it is highly recommended to consult a specialist about the surgical options best suited to your case.

If you are interested in hymen reconstruction, you can request a free surgical assessment consultation with no waiting time with the Gynecology Team of Clinica Premium in Marbella.

This will allow you to meet the specialist, have your situation assessed, and receive advice on the most appropriate treatment for you.

If you would like more information before booking the consultation, you can contact the Operarme team via the contact form, by calling at +34 91 141 33 56, or by clicking the image below.

    Make appointment

Once the consultation has been requested, one of our patient service advisors will get in touch with you to answer any questions you may have and to confirm that the date and time of the appointment suit your needs.

  • On the day of your consultation with the specialist at the Clinica Premium, you will need to bring along all relevant medical and diagnostic reports regarding your condition.

The specialist will review your medical history, carry out a physical examination, and analyse any supporting medical documents (such as ultrasounds, blood tests, etc.). The purpose of this consultation is to understand your background and rule out any possible contraindications for surgery.

After the consultation, our patient service team will contact you to find out how it went and whether you have decided to proceed with the operation.

If so, they will explain the next steps, schedule your preoperative and anaesthetic appointments, and answer any questions you may have during the process.

Below, we explain everything you need to know about the hymen reconstruction surgery step by step, as well as the preoperative process and post-surgical care guidelines up to full recovery.

    Preoperative process for hymenoplasty

On the day scheduled for your hymenoplasty preoperative assessment, you will need to attend the Clinica Premium.

After submitting the necessary paperwork, you will be accompanied to undergo the three required tests to determine whether you are suitable for surgery and what type of anaesthesia will be used:

    • Electrocardiogram (ECG): to assess the condition of your heart.
    • Chest X-ray: this is not always required and will only be carried out if prescribed by the doctor. It helps detect signs of pulmonary disease and ensures the trachea is properly aligned.
    • Full blood test: includes a complete blood count, basic coagulation study, renal function analysis, and glucose levels. A urine test will also be carried out to rule out infection.
    • Anaesthetist consultation: you must inform the anaesthetist if you suffer from any allergies, are taking any medication (whether prescribed or not), or have undergone any previous surgeries. This consultation will determine the most suitable type of anaesthesia for the operation.

If the anaesthetist gives approval for surgery, the next step will be to attend the hospital for the procedure.

  • When the day of surgery arrives, you will return to the Clinica Premium. First, you will need to hand in all the required documentation, as indicated by our advisors, at admissions. Then, a member of the medical team will escort you to the pre-operative room, where you will be given surgical clothing and prepared for the procedure.

Hymenoplasty is the surgical technique used to restore the hymenal membrane to its original, pre-tear condition.

Once everything is ready, you will be taken to the operating theatre, where you will meet the specialist, the anaesthetist, and several members of the nursing team who will assist during the procedure.

After being positioned for gynaecological surgery, the anaesthetist will administer local anaesthesia and sedation. Once the anaesthesia has taken effect, the surgery will begin:

Procedure when the hymen is too small

    1. After the anaesthesia takes effect, the surgeon makes small incisions near the hymen, in the vaginal epithelium (the mucous membrane lining the vaginal walls).
    2. The tissue is then stitched using absorbable sutures, reconstructing the hymenal structure to its original state.
    3. Once suturing is complete, the operation is finished.

Procedure when the hymen is sufficiently large

    1. Once the area is numb, the surgeon locates the remaining parts of the membrane.
    2. The edges are refreshed and sutured together using absorbable stitches, taking care to ensure they are not visible.
    3. After completing the necessary sutures and achieving the desired shape of the new hymen, the procedure is concluded.

Both techniques are performed on an outpatient basis, meaning you will be able to leave the clinic on your own after the surgery, with no need for hospital admission.

As for the duration of the operation, regardless of the technique used, the procedure typically takes just 30 to 60 minutes to complete.

  • After hymenoplasty, it is time to focus on the post-operative period and follow the necessary care to help ensure a smooth and speedy recovery.

Full recovery is typically achieved six weeks after the procedure.

Once the operation is complete and the effects of the anaesthesia have worn off, you will be able to return home to rest and follow your specialist’s instructions.

    The recommended post-operative care includes:

    • It is advisable to rest for the next 1 to 2 days and avoid sudden or strenuous movements.
    • You will need to maintain specific intimate hygiene, using water and a special intimate soap, both morning and night, as well as after using the toilet.
    • The stitches are absorbable and will dissolve on their own within 10 to 15 days.
    • We recommend waiting six weeks before resuming any physical activity.
    • You should avoid sports that may cause strain or risk tearing the hymen, such as gymnastics, horse riding, swimming, or cycling.
    • It is best not to use tampons during menstruation until after your first intimate relationship.
    • You may have your first sexual intercourse after six weeks, once healing is complete.
  • The main advantage of the procedure is that it reconstructs and repairs the membrane covering the entrance to the vagina in a simple and quick manner.

In addition, it may offer certain psychological benefits, such as improved self-esteem and a greater sense of self-determination for the patient.

On the other hand, as with any other surgical procedure, there are risks associated with hymenoplasty, including those related to anaesthesia. There are also specific complications linked to this particular surgical technique:

    • Infection
    • Poor or abnormal scarring
    • Haematomas
    • Pain or discomfort
    • Bleeding or haemorrhage

It is important to stress that the risk of complications is very rare and can usually be managed effectively by following medical advice.

In addition to the benefits of the hymen reconstruction surgery itself, there are also several advantages of undergoing the procedure through Operarme.es. The main benefits include:

    • A free surgical assessment consultation with the Gynecology Team of Clinica Premium.

    • A fixed, all-inclusive price, guaranteed. You will know the final cost from the very beginning.

    • Fully personalised support from our patient service department, guiding you through every step of the process and answering any questions, so you never feel lost and can focus solely on your recovery.

Hymenoplasty, like most of our procedures, includes medical complications insurance, which covers issues such as the need for an overnight stay or a repeat operation. To learn more about this, please contact our patient service team.
