Dilation and Curettage (D&C) includes a medical complications insurance covering possible eventualities that may affect the patient during the surgical procedure and 30 days after surgical intervention, including reoperation if needed.
Medical complications insurance covers related surgical procedure expenses, such as:

Dilation and curettage (D&C) is a minor surgical procedure performed under local or light general anaesthesia by a gynaecology specialist.
The procedure typically lasts around 15 minutes.
During the surgery, cells from the inner lining of the uterus—known as the endometrium—are carefully removed. This layer naturally regenerates with each menstrual cycle.
A D&C is usually carried out to treat issues related to menstruation or to remove uterine fibroids, polyps, and other abnormalities.
A D&C may be recommended in the following cases:
- Diagnostic purposes: A biopsy D&C allows for a sample of endometrial tissue to be collected and analysed when uterine cancer is suspected. This type of cancer is more common in postmenopausal women.
- Treatment of irregular menstruation: D&C is also used to address abnormal bleeding between periods, as well as excessively heavy or painful menstrual cycles.
- Removal of fibroids or polyps: These are benign growths that develop inside the uterus and can cause complications such as heavy bleeding, recurrent miscarriages, or implantation failure.
- Embedded intrauterine device (IUD): Long-term contraceptive devices can occasionally become embedded in the endometrium, making removal difficult. In such cases, D&C is performed to remove part of the endometrial tissue and safely extract the IUD.

Step-by-Step: how a Dilation and Curettage (D&C) is performed
A D&C, also known as uterine curettage, is a simple procedure that usually takes around 15 minutes.
To ensure the patient feels no discomfort or pain, the procedure is performed under local or light general anaesthesia.
The steps involved in an obstetric or gynaecological D&C are as follows:
- Preparation and anaesthesia: Once everything is ready in the operating theatre, you will lie on the surgical table in the position indicated by the specialist. The anaesthetist will then administer the anaesthetic.
- Cervical dilation: After the anaesthesia takes effect, a speculum is inserted to open the vaginal canal and allow access to the cervix. The cervix is then gently dilated to facilitate the introduction of the surgical instruments.
- Curettage: A special instrument called a curette—a thin rod with a small loop at the end—is inserted through the cervix. Using this instrument, the gynaecologist carefully scrapes and removes the endometrial tissue from the uterine lining.
- Post-procedure check: Once the curettage is complete, the surgeon checks for any excessive bleeding or signs of injury. If a tissue sample was taken, it is sent to the pathology unit for analysis, if required.

Post-operative care after a dilation and curettage (D&C)
After a D&C, it is common to experience vaginal bleeding for 10 to 15 days. However, this is not menstrual bleeding. Your next menstrual period will usually occur 30 to 40 days after the procedure.
You may also feel abdominal discomfort or pelvic pain. To relieve these symptoms, it is advisable to rest and take over-the-counter painkillers as recommended.
Despite this, recovery after the procedure is generally very quick, and you can usually return to your normal daily activities the day after the surgery. However, it is important to follow a few key recommendations:
- Avoid sexual intercourse for at least two weeks after the procedure.
- Do not use tampons.
- Avoid vaginal douching and taking baths (showers are allowed).
- Refrain from intense physical exercise.
