Lipomas and sebaceous cysts are two different medical problems that are generally mistaken for one another.

The main reason for their removal is aesthetic, since they often appear in the head or the neck. In regards to medical reasons, we find infections or excessive growth as the main causes for their removal.

• Once the anaesthesia has taken effect, the surgeon will make an incision in the skin and will dissect the different skin layers until he/she gets access to the lipoma or cyst, extirpating its capsule to remove it permanently. 
• To finish, the surgeon closes and sutures the incision layer by layer. 

The duration of the surgery takes up between 30 to 40 minutes approx., depending on the lipoma/cyst size.

After surgery, you can go home directly (there’s no need of hospitalisation), and you must follow a series of instructions to avoid infections in the first weeks. 

This surgery is an outpatient intervention, leaving for home right after the extraction of the cysts or lipomas:

• The stitches are removed within 7-10 days after surgery, if they are not re-absorbable.
• Any discomfort after surgery may last a month, although it’s not common.

You won’t need to ask for sick leave in your work, since after this surgery, the patient is able to follow his/her daily routines. 

During the first month, you will have to take care of the scar and avoid direct sunlight; it’s recommended to use scar creams during this period.
