02. How is Laparoscopic Hiatal Hernia Surgery performed?
Hiatus is the diaphragm's opening, a muscle that separates the thorax from the abdomen, crossed by the oesophagus to connect the stomach with the abdominal area.
If the hiatus becomes dilated and enlarged, it usually causes that part of the stomach rises through this hole and up to the diaphragm, leading to what is known as an hiatus or hiatal hernia.
When a patient makes the decision of having surgery for a hiatal hernia repair, it’s important to take into account a few steps previous to the surgery in order for it to be performed as safely and effectively as possible. We’re going to explain below step by step how hiatal hernia surgery is carried out at Operarme.
First of all, the patient has been previously diagnosed with a hiatus hernia and needs surgery to repair it so the patient books a surgical assessment consultation with one of our general surgeons, through our website.
You can ask for an appointment by clicking on the “Make an appointment” button, calling at +34 91 141 33 56 or filling our contact form here.
Once the patient has attended the appointment and the surgeon has confirmed the intervention and technique, our patient service team will contact him/her to inform about the schedule and coming appointments of the patient’s surgical procedure.
Hiatal Hernia Surgery by Laparoscopy is a major surgery that is performed under sedation and general anaesthesia and lasts between 1-2 hours.
These are the steps the surgeon takes to perform a Laparoscopic Hiatal Hernia Surgery:
- First of all, the surgeon will disinfect the abdominal area where he/she will make 3 to 5 mini incisions needed to treat the hernia.
- Next, the surgeon will introduce a harmless gas into the cavity to enlarge it and improve visibility.
- The next step is to insert a laparoscopy into the area through one of these mini incisions. The laparoscope is an instrument that allows the surgeon to get a better view of the inside of the body on a monitor, and therefore removing the need of opening the patient.
- Following the insertion of the laparoscope, the doctor will introduce the surgical tools needed to start repairing the hiatal hernia.
- The surgeon repairs a hiatus hernia by suturing the opening of the diaphragm in order to prevent the stomach from rising upwards. Also, if there’s gastric reflux, which is usually common, an anti-reflux technique is performed to prevent reflux and the stomach from rising through the hiatus.
- After fixing the hernia, the doctor will check for damage to the surrounding structures, remove the gas, the laparoscope and instruments inserted, and finally proceed with the suture of the patient.
- Once the surgery is completed, the doctors will proceed to awake the patient in the operating room.
- At the end of the laparoscopic hiatal hernia repair, the patient will be taken to the recovery room to recover from the anaesthesia.
03. Post-operative of an Hiatal Hernia Repair
Once in his/her private room, the patient will stay for the night in the hospital. Thanks to the minimally invasive laparoscopic technique, the patient can be discharged from the hospital earlier due to reduced bleeding and incision.
After the doctor’s decision to discharge the patient, he/she will be able to return home. Once the inpatient has been given the discharge report, he/she can request the transfer service offered on our services.
The complete recovery time of the Hiatal Hernia Repair by Laparoscopy is estimated between 2 to 3 weeks.
04. Advantages of Laparoscopic Hiatal Hernia Surgery
Following the different stages of the surgical procedure, we offer you a list of advantages of the intervention of Laparoscopic Hiatal Hernia:
- The main advantage of Laparoscopic Hiatal Hernia repair is pain relief and as a result, an improvement in your quality of life.
- Elimination of gastroesophageal reflux symptoms
- Avoid serious complications related to hiatal hernia and gastroesophageal reflux.
- Laparoscopic technique offers a speedy recovery and a short stay at the hospital.
- Post-operative scarring is minimal, since the surgeon only makes small incisions, instead of big ones, which are usual in open surgery.
Since this intervention is a minimal invasive surgery, risks are minimal, less than 1% of probability. Possible complications are well controlled.
