02. How is Hemorrhoids surgery performed?
Hemorrhoids are varicose dilatation (similar to varicose veins in the legs) of the hemorrhoidal veins located in the internal area of the anal canal. The anal canal is located between the rectum and the final portion of the digestive tract. Depending on their severity, they may protrude outwards, hurt excessively or mildly when defecating, bleed or simply cause discomfort when sitting or standing for long periods of time.
The hemorrhoid surgery is considered a major outpatient surgery, although in many cases the patient stays in hospital overnight to rest.
On the day of the surgery, you will go to the hospital with all the documentation required for admission, and hand it in at the main desk. Then, you will be taken to your single room with a spare bed, where you will stay until the time of the operation.
When it is time for the surgery, you will be taken to the operating room where you will meet the surgeon, the anaesthetist and a member of the nursing team.
Once the anaesthesia has been administered, the surgery will begin. During the procedure, the anaesthetist will remain in the room monitoring the anaesthesia levels and your vital signs.
The surgery may be carried out through two different techniques:
Open hemorrhoidectomy
This surgical technique is performed under spinal (lower body) anaesthesia and sedation, which involves you remaining lightly asleep without the need for intubation. The open haemorrhoid operation is performed in the following steps:
- The surgeon removes the vascular plexus of varicose haemorrhoidal veins from inside the anus using surgical forceps.
- During the process, the anus is dilated so that the specialist surgeon can see inside the anal canal and determine where the source of the haemorrhoids is located.
- The surgeon then dissects the haemorrhoidal plexus at the highest point, leaving the inner wound unsutured.
Closed hemorrhoidectomy
This surgical technique works exactly in the same way as the open technique. First the vascular plexus is removed with a surgical clamp, the anus is dilated so that the area furthest away from the haemorrhoid can be seen and then the veins are removed at their highest point. The main difference between this technique and the open technique is that in this case the wound is sutured.
After the procedure, you will be taken to the recovery room where you will remain until you have recovered from the anaesthesia, and then, you will be transferred to your room.

03. Post-operative of Hemorrhoids surgery
Normally the patient leaves the hospital on the same day of the intervention, although sometimes it is recommended that you stay in hospital for 1 night. Before leaving the hospital, you will be given a series of instructions that you must follow to avoid suffering a lot of pain during your recovery, and at the same time speed up your recovery. These instructions include:
- Eat food containing fibre.
- Ingest laxatives.
- Take baths with lukewarm water 2-3 times a day.
During the days following the haemorrhoid operation (removal) you may notice slight bleeding in the anal area, which is not something to worry about as this is quite normal.
If the surgery has gone well and you have followed the indications by the surgeon, full recovery is completed approximately 2 weeks after the intervention, depending on the extent of the hemorrhoids. However, you can return to your daily activities within 2 to 3 days after surgery.
04. Advantages of Hemorrhoids surgery
The advantages of undergoing an intervention for hemorrhoids are the following: disappearance of pain, improvement in quality of life and, above all, the very low risk of their reappearance.
Full recovery after haemorrhoidectomy is complete 2 weeks after surgery.
