02. How is Epigastric Hernia Surgery performed?

Epigastric hernias are named after the place where it appears, between the sternum and the navel. In most cases, they are caused by an abnormal strain of the abdominal wall and cannot be repaired without surgery.

There are cases of painless hernias, which are not recommended for surgery, however if they appear, it is always recommended to undergo epigastric hernia repair, as the pain may worsen over time.

This type of hernia mainly appears due to lifting heavy objects, a persistent coughing, or difficulties for defecation or urination.

These are the main causes in adults along with ageing or congenital problems that can lead to its appearance.

Epigastric Hernia Surgery

When a patient makes the decision of having surgery for an Epigastric hernia repair, it’s important to take into account a few steps previous to the surgery in order for it to be performed as safely and effectively as possible. We’re going to explain below step by step how epigastric hernia surgery is carried out at Operarme.

First of all, the patient has been previously diagnosed with an epigastric Hernia and needs surgery to repair it, so the patient books a surgical assessment consultation with one of our general surgeons, through our website.

You can ask for an appointment by clicking on the “Make an appointment” button, calling at +34 91 141 33 56 or filling our contact form here.

Once the patient has attended the appointment and the surgeon has confirmed the intervention and technique, our patient service team will contact him/her to inform about the schedule and coming appointments of the patient’s surgical procedure.

Epigastric Hernia Surgery is a major surgery that is performed under general anaesthesia and lasts between 30-40 minutes.

These are the steps the surgeon takes to perform an Epigastric Hernia Surgery:

  • First of all, general anaesthesia will be given to the patient, meaning that the patient stays asleep throughout the procedure.
  • The surgeon starts making an incision between 5-10cm where the hernia is located, between the sternum and the navel.
  • Through this incision, the surgeon accesses the hernial defect on the abdomen wall.
  • Once the hernial sac is located, the surgeon will introduce it back again into the interior of the abdominal cavity.
  • The specialist closes the weakening of the abdominal wall with stitches.
  • Once it’s closed, the surgeon will place a surgical mesh in the weekend area of the abdomen, which will prevent the hernia from protruding again.
  • Finally, the surgeon will place stitches and dressings in the incisions, and remove anaesthesia from the patient.
  • At the end of the surgery, the patient will be taken to the recovery room to recover from the anaesthesia.

The intervention for Epigastric Hernia Repair lasts between 30 and 40 minutes.

03. Post-operative of an Epigastric Hernia Repair

The epigastric hernia surgery is usually an outpatient intervention, and the patient can leave the hospital on the same day as the operation. However, the patient will sometimes be required to stay in hospital for 24 to 48 hours.

Epigastric Hernia Surgery

After the doctor’s decision to discharge the patient, he/she will be able to return home. Once the patient has been given the discharge report, he/she can request the transfer service offered on our services.

The complete recovery time of the Epigastric Hernia Surgery is estimated in 4 weeks.

04. Advantages of Epigastric Hernia Surgery

The main advantage of this surgery is the relief of non-stop discomfort caused by this affliction. Moreover, since this intervention is quite routinary and simple, the chances of medical complications are minimal.
