NOT Included - Medical prescription
In Spain, a medical prescription is required for any diagnostic test. If you do not have one, you will need to see a specialist beforehand to obtain one.
Below, we explain the process step by step, whether you have it or not:
If you have a medical prescription
- Purchase the test as normal.
- Immediately afterwards, we will send you the instructions for you to send us the medical prescription to the e-mail address you used to make the purchase, so that we can manage the appointment.
- With the medical prescription we will be able to check that the diagnostic test purchased corresponds to the one indicated by the specialist.
- We will arrange your appointment with a date and time so that you can go to the hospital of your choice to undergo the test.
You do not have a medical prescription
If you do not have a medical prescription, Operarme will arrange a consultation with one of our specialists at a preferential price (subject to availability in the area). Contact us for more information.
During the consultation you will be able to inform the doctor about the test you need. He/she may ask you for a report in relation to your medical problem, if the test you need to have requires it.
If you do not have a prescription or report associated with the reason for the diagnostic test, it is likely that you will be referred to a face-to-face consultation. If this is your case, contact us for advice on how to proceed.
Remember: on the day of the test you must bring and show the Operarme voucher and the medical prescription.
-
Refund if test is not carried out
If after purchasing the test you decide not to take it or the date of the appointment does not suit your needs, you can request a refund. In these cases, we will refund you the full amount of your purchase without any problem.
To do so, please contact our customer service team before the date of the appointment, and we will manage the refund quickly and easily.

What should you take into account before purchasing this MRI test?

Right after, you have to call the selected hospital/clinic’s contact number (indicated in the voucher), and request an appointment to take the test.
On the day of the appointment, you will need to take the prescription with you. When is an MRI scan with contrast prescribed?
Contrast is a technique that allows us to highlight or differentiate lesions in our body more clearly.
The decision of prescribing an MRI with contrast depends on the patient’s medical condition, and the clinical questions that throughout this test the specialist tries to resolve.

Purchase ServiceSome of these cases are the following:
-
Assess tumours: contrast can highlight the area of the tumours that have a higher blood flow, which can help determine the extent of the tumour and its relation to the surrounding tissues.
-
Assess inflammatory diseases: contrast can highlight the inflammatory areas and help determine the extent of the disease, for example in cases of multiple sclerosis.
-
Assess the extent of trauma injuries.
The use of contrast should be determined by a medical specialist, depending on the individual needs and circumstances of each patient.

What does an MRI scan with contrast consist of?
Generally, before having an MRI scan done, you mustn’t take any previous indications prior to the test. In some exceptional cases, the specialist will indicate if you need to attend on an empty stomach to the appointment.
On the day of the MRI scan, the hospital staff will give you a robe and ask you to remove any metallic objects you might wear on you. Right after, you will lie on a motorised table and you will be given a small amount of gadolinium intravenously (contrast). You may feel a warm or cold sensation at the injection site, but it does not cause any pain.
Once you’re ready, the motorised table will slide into the MRI tube and, from another room, the technician will monitor the progress of the test.
During the procedure the scan can make loud tapping noises at certain times, therefore you'll be given earplugs or headphones to wear and block the noise.
If you feel uncomfortable in small spaces, or you are claustrophobic, you can ask for a sedative prior to the procedure.
However, you need to consult first with the specialist if this is an option or not. Moreover, you will have at all times a button to press in case you start feeling anxiety or get overwhelmed. However, most people pass the test without difficulty.

Frequent Questions
-
Is the contrast liquid (gadolinium) toxic?
No. In general, gadolinium is safe and well tolerated by most patients. However, on rare occasions, gadolinium can cause side effects. The most common side effects include nausea, vomiting, headache, and feeling hot or cold at the site of administration. These side effects are usually mild and disappear quickly.
In very rare cases, gadolinium can cause a severe allergic reaction called nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF), which mainly affects patients with advanced kidney disease. NSF is a rare disease that can cause fibrosis (hardening) of the skin and other organs.
This is why it is important to get a prescription from your doctor. Your doctor will only prescribe it if your allergy history and medical history are suitable for it.
