NOT Included - Medical prescription
In Spain, a medical prescription is required for any diagnostic test. If you do not have one, you will need to see a specialist beforehand to obtain one.
Below, we explain the process step by step, whether you have it or not:
If you have a medical prescription
- Purchase the test as normal.
- Immediately afterwards, we will send you the instructions for you to send us the medical prescription to the e-mail address you used to make the purchase, so that we can manage the appointment.
- With the medical prescription we will be able to check that the diagnostic test purchased corresponds to the one indicated by the specialist.
- We will arrange your appointment with a date and time so that you can go to the hospital of your choice to undergo the test.
You do not have a medical prescription
If you do not have a medical prescription, Operarme will arrange a consultation with one of our specialists at a preferential price (subject to availability in the area). Contact us for more information.
During the consultation you will be able to inform the doctor about the test you need. He/she may ask you for a report in relation to your medical problem, if the test you need to have requires it.
If you do not have a prescription or report associated with the reason for the diagnostic test, it is likely that you will be referred to a face-to-face consultation. If this is your case, contact us for advice on how to proceed.
Remember: on the day of the test you must bring and show the Operarme voucher and the medical prescription.
-
Refund if test is not carried out
If after purchasing the test you decide not to take it or the date of the appointment does not suit your needs, you can request a refund. In these cases, we will refund you the full amount of your purchase without any problem.
To do so, please contact our customer service team before the date of the appointment, and we will manage the refund quickly and easily.

What should you take into account before purchasing this type of ultrasound?
If you need an arterial doppler ultrasound, first you must have a medical prescription from your doctor or specialist.
In the event that you don’t have one but are interested in having an arterial doppler ultrasound, you can first purchase and attend a private consultation with one of our specialists and tell the doctor about the symptoms you have; if the doctor considers an ultrasound is necessary, he/she will hand you a prescription for the test.
Once you’ve purchased the arterial doppler ultrasound, you will automatically receive an email with your medical voucher, information regarding the service and the hospital, and also an invoice of the test purchased.
Right after, you have to call the selected hospital/clinic’s contact number (indicated in the voucher), and request an appointment to take the test.
On the day of the appointment, you will need to take the prescription with you. If you attend without a prescription, it’s likely that the hospital staff may refer you to a private consultation first. This consultation is not included in the price of the arterial doppler ultrasound you purchase on Operarme’s website and it is possible that the cost of the consultation at the hospital is higher than the preferential price published on our website for Operarme patients.
If you need another type of test, you can consult our diagnostic tests section and choose the one that best suits your needs (mammary ultrasound, urological ultrasound, gynaecological ultrasound, MRI, X-rays, etc).
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our Patient Service Team on +34 91 141 33 56 , or leave a contact form and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
02. What is an Arterial Doppler Ultrasound?
A Doppler Ultrasound is an imaging diagnostic technique that is used to evaluate the blood flow in the blood vessels and the heart. This test combines the conventional ultrasound with the measure of the speed and direction of the blood flow using the Doopler effect.
This technique provides relevant information about the state of the blood vessels, such as the presence of obstructions, narrowing, blood clots or anomalies in the blood flow. It may help to diagnose and monitor medical conditions, such as peripheral arterial disease, deep vein thrombosis, aneurysms, chronic venous insufficiency, among others.

A Doppler Ultrasound is a non-invasive, painless and safe test that uses ultrasound waves instead of ionising radiation
It is performed by placing a transducer on the skin in the area of interest, which emits and receives ultrasound waves. A radiologist or ultrasound specialist interprets the results and provides a diagnostic report.
03. Which type of diseases can an arterial doppler ultrasound detect?
This exam can detect different conditions and also provide information about the current state of the arteries in the limbs.
Some of the medical conditions that the specialist can detect through an arterial doppler ultrasound are the following:
- Pre-operative assessment: before performing surgical procedures such as an arterial bypass, angioplasty, or varicose veins surgery, a doppler ultrasound can provide relevant information about the arterial anatomy, and the state of blood flow, which can be very useful for the surgeon in the planning of the procedure.
- Arterial stenosis: abnormal narrowing of the arteries which might be caused by the accumulation of the atheromatous plaques (atherosclerosis). This type of stenosis can restrict the blood flow and cause symptoms such as pain, cramps, or weakness in the arms or legs.
- Arterial obstruction: these obstructions may be caused by blood clots blocking the blood flow.
- Assessment of collateral circulation: the exam can detect the presence of alternative blood circulation routes, known as collateral circulation. These routes are naturally developed to compensate for the lack of blood flow to the affected areas.
- Evaluation of vascular grafts: in patients that have had vascular surgery to perform artery grafts, arterial Doppler ultrasound can assess the patency and function of these grafts, determining if there are any problems or complications.
04. How is an arterial doppler ultrasound performed?
No special preparation is required for a Doppler ultrasound. However, you may be asked to remove jewellery, clothing or metal objects that may interfere with the scan.
Generally during a doppler ultrasound, the specialist follows this steps:
- First, you will lie in a stretcher or you will take a sit, depending on the limb to be examined. The technician will give you instructions on how to position the limb to get the best images and access areas of interest.
- Before going ahead with the exploration, the technician will apply a transparent gel in the area to be examined. This gel helps the ultrasound waves to be transmitted easily between the skin and the transducer, making it easier to obtain clear images.
- Next, the technician will slide the transducer over the gel in the area being evaluated.
- As the technician moves the transducer, real-time images can be viewed on a monitor. These images show the anatomical structures, such as the arteries, veins and surrounding tissues, and also the blood flow.
- During the exploration, the technician will use the doppler method to assess the state of the blood flow in real-time. This technique provides visualisation of the direction and velocity of blood flow in arteries or veins by means of colour or numerical measurements.
- In some cases, the specialist may ask you to perform certain movements or positions to evaluate blood flow in different conditions.
Once the scan is completed, a radiologist or ultrasound specialist will interpret the images and the results obtained. A diagnostic report will be prepared and given to the requesting doctor, who will use this information for diagnosis and treatment planning, if necessary.
05. How long does a doppler ultrasound take?
An arterial doppler ultrasound can take between 30-60 minutes, depending on the extent of the study and the complexity of the clinical situation.
Once the exploration has been completed, the radiologist or ultrasound specialist will interpret the images and the results obtained; a diagnostic report will be prepared and given to the requesting doctor.
06. Arterial Doppler Ultrasound Results
A few days after the ultrasound, you will receive the results. You will generally receive the tests in digital format, as well as a report indicating the most important observations from the test.

Frequent Questions
-
Are the ultrasound waves from an ultrasound scan dangerous?
No, the waves used in an ultrasound scan are not considered hazardous to health. Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves, also known as ultrasound.
Ultrasound does not produce ionising radiation, like x-rays, so there is no risk of radiation exposure during an Arterial Doppler Ultrasound. In addition, the ultrasound waves used in ultrasound have a very low intensity and are focused on a specific area of the body, which further reduces any possible harmful effects.
Ultrasound has been widely used for decades and has not been shown to have significant adverse health effects on either the patients or the health professionals performing the test. It is a safe and non-invasive technique that is routinely used in medical diagnosis, especially during pregnancy for obstetric ultrasound.
However, it is important to note that, as with any medical procedure, ultrasound should be used appropriately and justified by a physician or health professional. Clinical guidelines and recommendations should be followed to ensure safe and effective use of this diagnostic technique.
