02. What are the main causes of darkening of the teeth?
There are several reasons for tooth whitening treatment. In order for you to be better informed, below we explain the main causes that cause a change in the colour of our teeth that can be solved with teeth whitening:
- Age: as the years go by, the enamel wears down, as well as the appearance of stains on the internal or external surface of the teeth. Therefore, the older you get, the more complex teeth whitening tends to be, although it is not impossible to carry out successfully.
- Dental hypoplasia: this is a congenital anomaly that can be observed as white spots on the tooth enamel. This defect causes you to have less enamel, leading to the appearance of dents or grooves in the teeth.
- Dental fluorosis: this is the development of enamel hypoplasia (white spots) as a result of the excessive use of fluoride during the formation of permanent teeth.
- Food and habits: our teeth may change colour due to exposure to or consumption of certain drinks, foods or habits such as smoking. Among the foods and drinks we highlight sources with strong colouring power such as, for example, coffee, wine or soft drinks, or, on the other hand, red fruits (strawberries, cherries, blackberries, etc.), curry, chocolate and saffron. As well as citrus fruits or vinegar, which cause darkening due to the erosion of the enamel.
- Blows or trauma: as a result of a blow to one or more teeth, there is the possibility of nerve necrosis (death of the dental nerve), causing the affected tooth to darken completely, as it has lost its vitality.
- Consumption of tetracycline drugs: some years ago (in the 60s and 70s), tetracycline antibiotics were prescribed to remedy some respiratory conditions and, although they are now banned, this drug caused staining of the teeth that could vary in different degrees, depending on the amount of the drug consumed.
Do any of these causes affect your smile? As we have already mentioned, in most cases it is possible to re-establish the shade you want thanks to whitening treatment. Below we explain what this procedure consists of so that you can choose the best option for you.

03. What is Teeth whitening by photoactivation?
Teeth whitening by photoactivation, also known as cold light or laser whitening, is one of the procedures used to restore the correct colour to tooth enamel. It is considered one of the most modern, fast and effective treatments, standing out for its guaranteed results from the first session.
In order to carry out the procedure, it is necessary, first of all, a general check-up of your oral health, ensuring that the treatment is viable and is carried out on healthy teeth, that is, without caries, periodontal conditions or any other type of problem that must be solved before whitening.
In addition, a professional oral cleaning must also be carried out to obtain the best results from the very first moment.
Specifically, the teeth whitening treatment, after confirming its viability and performing the cleaning, consists of applying a whitening gel composed of hydrogen peroxide (at 37.5% - 40%) to the surface of the teeth, which is activated with a cold light lamp or laser.
This technique is carried out in dental clinics where you will find professionals specialised in dental aesthetic treatments.
Bear in mind that resorting to home remedies or "miracle products", in addition to not ensuring their effectiveness, can have adverse effects on your oral health.
04. What results can be achieved after teeth whitening?
After teeth whitening treatment by photoactivation, it is possible to lighten your teeth up to 4 or 6 shades after one or two sessions, together with the complementary outpatient treatment with splints and gel applied at home.
The results achieved can vary in duration and effectiveness, always depending on oral care routines such as daily hygiene, consumption of certain foods or drinks and other habits such as smoking.
Therefore, if you want your teeth to maintain their best colour, you should follow the guidelines indicated by the specialist.
If you continue reading, you can find all the indications explained in detail in the section "Care during and after tooth whitening treatment".
If you are thinking that the best option for you is whitening treatment with photoactivation, you can request a free, immediate, no-obligation assessment appointment with one of our Dental Aesthetics Specialists at Caser Dental Clinics, by clicking on the following image:

05. Who is a candidate for teeth whitening treatment on both arches?
As we aforementioned, in order to undergo teeth whitening you need to meet certain requirements that ensure the viability of the treatment and allow us to know that your oral health is ideal.
Therefore, to be a candidate for the aesthetic treatment you must have a healthy mouth, be of legal age (over 18 years old) and, obviously, have all your permanent teeth.
On the other hand, thanks to dental whitening with photoactivation you can solve problems such as the appearance of white stains, discolouration due to excessive consumption of food or drinks with a high concentration of elements that stain the enamel, darkening due to smoking and even solve the discolouration of teeth due to having suffered a blow or trauma.
On the other hand, the whitening process with photoactivation is totally contraindicated if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. The same exception applies if you are allergic to peroxide.
06. Booking of a free assessment consultation
Before deciding whether or not to undergo whitening treatment, you should request a free, no-obligation consultation with our General Odontologist and the Specialist in Dental Aesthetics through the Operarme website, so that you can meet them in a face-to-face consultation and they can assess whether or not the procedure is indicated.
After requesting the consultation through the website, one of our personal patient service advisors will call you to confirm the date of the consultation and answer any questions you may have. However, you can also request information at any time by calling at +34 91 141 33 56 or by using the contact form.
If you, along with the Specialist, decide that you are going to undergo the whitening treatment and it is feasible, you can set a date to have it done during the same consultation. In any case, our patient service team will contact you and manage the whole process, assessment and treatment appointment, control visits, etc, guiding you and helping you throughout the whole process.
Read on to find out in detail what you will find in the consultations with our specialists, all the information about the procedure and its results.
07. Consultation with the specialist in dental aesthetics
On the day of the appointment and after the consultation with the General Odontologist, you will be called in by the Dental Aesthetics Expert, who will carry out the relevant tests that will help him/her to determine the state of your teeth, identify if there is any condition and rule out complications or limitations that could affect the treatment. He or she will also inform you of the possibilities and results that you will obtain thanks to dental whitening with photoactivation of the complete dental arches.
During this consultation, the necessary diagnostic tests such as clinical examination, photographs and study models will be carried out.
If during the consultation you decide, together with the specialist, to start the treatment, you will be able to set a date for the procedure on the same day. In any case, our patient service team will contact you to see how the appointment went and to find out your decision. If so, they will inform you about the next steps to follow and will manage the whole process.
08. Diagnostic tests to confirm treatment feasibility
In order for the specialist to determine that the photoactivation whitening treatment is viable and to be able to go ahead with your case, the following tests must be taken into account during the diagnosis:
- Review of the medical history: the specialist will review all the clinical history that may be relevant to the treatment and that may have produced the colour changes in your teeth (taking antibiotics, illnesses, consumption of narcotics, excessive consumption of fluoride,...).
- Dental examination: this is an examination of the patient's oral health to avoid jeopardising the success of the treatment. The specialist will check that your teeth do not have cavities, low gum levels, uncovered roots, gum inflammation, excessive sensitivity to cold or heat, as well as severe loss of enamel, as all these conditions would not allow you to undergo whitening.
Although you can probably already imagine it, it is necessary to take into account some important aspects before starting the whitening treatment, above all, factors that affect the state of your teeth before starting the process; we explain the most relevant ones below.

09. Issues to consider before whitening complete dental arches
Before starting the whitening process, it will be necessary to carry out some previous steps to prepare the teeth correctly and help the treatment to be completed with the best results.
These steps are as follows:
- Determine the factor causing the darkening of the teeth: first of all, the specialist will use the information obtained during the dental examination to determine the cause of the discolouration of your teeth. Depending on the cause of the problem, the whitening substance, hydrogen peroxide or carbamide, will be chosen in the concentration that best suits the case.
- Determine the ideal colour for your teeth: not all of us have the same shade of enamel, mainly due to congenital causes, so the specialist will determine the shade that can be achieved and the one that is most similar to your teeth in their lightest shade. Bear in mind that excessively white teeth are not at all aesthetic, especially because the natural colours of our teeth can vary between grey, orange and yellow tones.
- Eliminate materials present on the teeth: it is essential to eliminate caries, resins or unsuitable amalgams (old filings or fillings in poor condition), thus preventing these materials that are harmful to the health of the teeth from entering the tooth and causing the death of the pulp (vital part of the tooth), which would cause irreversible damage to your oral health.
- Complete cleaning: before applying the whitening product, it is necessary to carry out a complete and professional cleaning of the teeth. This will remove all surface stains, caries, bacterial plaque and tartar.
- Covering exposed necks or roots: to prevent the whitening gel from causing any damage or alteration to the gums and necks or roots of the teeth, it will be necessary to carry out a previous treatment of gum grafting or curing of the periodontal disease. If you have any inconvenience due to lack of gum or periodontal disease and it is not treated, the whitening procedure cannot be carried out as it would have harmful effects on your health.
10. Day of the teeth whitening treatment by photoactivation: step by step
As you can see, the treatment itself is not as complex as it seems. Next, we explain in detail how you will go through the whole procedure, from the moment you arrive at the dental office until you leave with your best smile.
On the day of the teeth whitening treatment and already seated in the dental cabinet, the specialist will proceed to carry out the oral check-up and after confirming the viability, the dental cleaning (prophylaxis) will begin.
Afterwards, the whitening process will begin, ensuring that plaque, tartar, etc. have been removed:
- During the session at the clinic, first of all, you will be fitted with lip retainers that will allow the specialist to access all the teeth.
- Next, the mucosal tissues of the mouth (gums) are polymerised to isolate them so that they are not damaged or altered during whitening.
- The specialist will then apply the hydrogen peroxide activator gel (37.5% - 40%) and turn on the cold light to photo activate the gel, releasing the oxygen on the teeth and thus the whitening properties.
- After 30 - 45 minutes, the light is removed and the remaining whitening gel is wiped off the teeth, ending the whitening session.
However, in order to preserve the results achieved during the whitening treatment in the clinic after it has been completed, it is extremely important that you do not neglect to follow the instructions given to you by the specialist. This will guarantee the duration and effectiveness of the whitening treatment.
11. Care during and after teeth whitening treatment
Keep in mind that achieving the best results, and maintaining them over the long term, can be achieved by following some of the most obvious tips that dental professionals often give. If you are interested in refreshing your memory and achieving the best, effective and long-lasting whitening results, don't skip any of the following guidelines:
- Hygiene: oral hygiene is extremely important for everyone, whether or not you have had your teeth whitened, so you should give it the importance it deserves, avoiding the appearance of bacterial plaque and cavities that can lead to more complex and dangerous problems for your health. This means that you should brush your teeth after every meal, preferably with an electric toothbrush, and floss at least once a day. As for the complementary use of rinses, it is recommended to use them only if your hygienist deems it necessary and convenient, but the rinse must be with fluoride and without alcohol.
- Food: as we warned you at the beginning of this page, there are several foods and drinks that contain high concentrations of dyes that can cause stains on the enamel of our teeth. However, it is not necessary to stop consuming them, simply moderate your intake and be more cautious about the number of brushes per day when consuming foods and drinks such as wine, tea, coffee, red fruits, curry, soya, paprika or citrus fruits.
- Tobacco: Smoking is totally incompatible with maintaining good oral health and an optimal quality of life in general. Smoking causes stains on your teeth, as well as enamel corrosion and periodontal disease. That is why the best and most convenient thing to do is to eliminate this habit completely from your life.
- Maintenance: after the whitening treatment at the clinic and the complementary treatment at home, it is recommended to have check-ups every 6 months or annually, as the changes or modifications in the colour and brightness of the teeth may vary in each patient. During these check-ups, the professional can help you to maintain the best appearance and oral health, recommending treatments such as a professional dental cleaning that will help to achieve and preserve long-lasting, quality results.
12. Advantages and risks of teeth whitening treatment of both arches
Thanks to the whitening treatment of complete dental arches by photoactivation, numerous advantages are achieved for you and your smile.
Among the benefits that the specialists highlight the most are the following:
- You get results from the first treatment session, spectacular changes, reaching up to 3 tones from the first session.
- It is a very quick, simple and painless technique. You will barely be in the clinic for an hour.
- It is a process that is compatible with other dental processes such as, for example, the use of veneers or crowns (it is recommended to change them for one of the same shade as the teeth after whitening), after wearing orthodontics, etc.
- Whitening is carried out uniformly and simultaneously on all teeth. Normally from the second premolar to the second premolar of the upper jaw and from the second premolar to the second premolar of the mandible.
In regards to the risks and disadvantages that whitening may present, we would highlight that it is a treatment that is not recommended in the case of unresolved oral conditions, as well as in the case of pregnant women, minors, and patients with severe dental trauma.
For this reason, we recommend that you always consult first with a specialist about the most suitable solution for your case, achieving the best results for your teeth.
