• Orthopantomography: this is a panoramic X-ray on a single film, which allows a general image of the jaws, jaw and teeth to be captured.
• Lateral teleradiography: these are very sharp images of the facial bones and teeth. They make it possible to measure the angles and proportions of the facial bones and to understand the relationship between the facial structures.
• Intra-oral photographs: framing only of the mouth without showing the lips, making use of lip retractors. These images are used to record the start of the treatment, the intermediate steps and the final result.

The specialist will have everything ready for the fitting of the orthodontic appliance. • Once in the dental chair, first of all, a dental prophylaxis is necessary. This involves cleaning and polishing the teeth to make it easier for the brackets to adhere to the teeth. Next, the dentist will place a dental separator together with a hoover and cotton wool to isolate the tooth surface and keep it as dry as possible.
• The tooth surface is then prepared by acid etching. This creates a microporous area so that the bracket can adhere correctly. Once the ideal surface has been achieved, the excess acid is removed and cleaned.
• The next step is to brush the adhesive onto the vestibular surface of the tooth. 
• Next, the composite is placed to fix the bracket and the bracket is positioned on the vestibular surface of the tooth. Next, any remaining composite is removed, leaving the surface polished.
• Once the brackets are in place, the archwire and the ligatures are placed to hold and adjust it.

Once the brackets have been fitted, the odontologist will explain all the necessary care that you will need to follow over the next few days and will schedule the next visit.

This process usually lasts approximately 30 minutes per arch, that is, around an hour in the case of placing the system on both arches, always depending on the complexity and characteristics of each one.

After the orthodontic appliance has been fitted, you will have to visit the dentist every month to monitor your treatment. During the check-ups, the orthodontist will be able to check the progress of the treatment and the necessary procedures will be carried out to continue the orthodontic treatment.

Treatment with fixed orthodontics with metal brackets ends after 18 months, although it may be shortened if it is a simpler case.

Once the objectives proposed by the orthodontist and the patient have been met, the orthodontic appliance is removed and then the retention appliance is fitted.

There is no need to worry, the retention appliance consists of a small, very fine wire that is cemented to the inside of the lower and upper incisors (although it cannot always be placed on the upper incisors), ensuring that the teeth do not move back to their original position.

In addition, during the first few months it is strictly necessary to wear a removable retainer (transparent splint), which helps to prevent tooth movement. After the indicated time, it is normal and advisable to continue wearing the splint only at night.
