What are the stitches like after circumcision?
- Resorbable stitches are used to close the surgical wound after phimosis surgery.
- As the stitches are absorbable, they do not need to be removed manually, as they will disappear over time.
- The stitches that are placed after circumcision will be reabsorbed by the skin in approximately 2 weeks.
After phimosis surgery, the medical team will close the wound with absorbable stitches. These stitches will disappear in less than 2 weeks, although it will depend on the situation you present and the individual patient.
The stitches that are usually used to close the wound after circumcision are usually absorbable, so it is not necessary to go to the doctor to have them removed, as they fall apart in the skin itself.
Recovery from circumcision is 4 - 6 weeks, after which all symptoms will disappear.
However, recovery is usually gradual, so you will feel better as the days go by.

How to care for phimosis stitches?
Circumcision is an operation with a series of advantages, among which we highlight that of the surgical wound, as it is not necessary to use stitches to close it.
The stitches used are dissolvable, so it will not be necessary to have any consultation for their removal.
However, as with any surgery, it is advisable to take a series of precautions into account:
- Although they are not painful, they can cause discomfort when rubbing against clothing, so it is recommended to cover the wound with gauze for the first few days.
- Wear tight-fitting underwear to prevent the penis from moving and rubbing.
- Take medication (painkillers) prescribed by your doctor to prevent infection.
- Rest for a couple of days to avoid discomfort caused by the rubbing of clothes when walking.
- Resume activities from the third day onwards.
- Maintain an upward penile position to reduce swelling and discomfort.
- If the wound bleeds (which is normal), it is advisable to surround the penis with gauze and squeeze for 5 minutes to stop the bleeding.
If the stitches become swollen, reddened or leak yellowish or whitish fluid, immediate medical attention is required.
Sex after phimosis surgery
During the stitch healing process, it is important to avoid erections, as they can be painful and even cause the stitches to pop out. Although there are methods to prevent erections, such as drinking water before bedtime, they are not very effective.
The best thing to do, in case the penis becomes erect, is to put ice under the testicles until there is no erection.
In addition, sexual intercourse is not recommended for 30 days after surgery. However, the length of time before you can resume sexual activity will be determined by your doctor.
Hygiene of the circumcision scar
After phimosis surgery, it is essential to take care of the stitches so that recovery is as quick and successful as possible.
You must keep the penis clean to avoid wound infections and speed up the healing process. This process can be done at home, once the bandage is removed, two days after surgery.
- First, wash the area with lukewarm water and neutral soap.
- Then dry it carefully, without rubbing the area, but by dabbing it gently.
- Finally, after drying the wound, you should apply povidone iodine, also known as betadine, with clean gauze.
We do not recommend home techniques to heal the wound, such as salt water, as this can increase the chance of infection. In any case, you should follow your doctor's instructions for circumcision wound hygiene.
In addition, the doctor will see you 15 days after the operation to check that everything is still on track and to monitor the healing process.
