- Having a short frenulum is a very common pathology among men all over the world.
- Having a short frenulum does not prevent men from leading a normal life, but its repair does lead to a clear improvement in patients who have undergone surgery.
- Short frenulum surgery is very simple and is performed daily in clinics and hospitals all over the world.
What is the frenulum?
The frenulum is the ventral cutaneous cord of the penis, which is mainly responsible for limiting the position of the withdrawn foreskin. Its function is to make it possible to retract the skin of the foreskin above the glans penis, in order to leave it completely uncovered, and it is therefore attached to the foreskin.
It is a thin strip of skin, made of a very elastic, V-shaped fabric, which lies just below the glans penis.

When this "cord" is short, we speak of a short frenulum.
If the frenulum is too short, the withdrawal of the foreskin backwards is limited, so that it is not possible to uncover the glans completely. The problem is often accentuated during an erection.
A short frenulum is often confused with phimosis, but it is not the same thing. With a simple physical examination, the urologist will be able to determine the pathology and propose the appropriate solutions.
At Operarme, the cost of short frenulum surgery is 490€
The complications of having a short frenulum
As the foreskin is difficult to pull back, pain can result from the tension exerted on the foreskin when trying to pull it back, and it can even break during sexual intercourse, bleeding profusely due to the extreme concentration of blood during erection.
This can be very alarming because of the amount of blood that comes out, but if you see a doctor immediately it is not a serious problem. However, it is always better to correct the problem before such a situation arises, which is unpleasant to say the least.
Having a frenulum that is too short can lead to a series of risks, such as tearing or an increased likelihood of infections in the area, commonly known as "balanitis", due to the difficulty of being able to perform proper hygiene in the area.
What are the solutions for short frenulum?
The main solution is surgical intervention. Although there are exercises that may increase the flexibility of the area, their results are usually not very effective and in no way can they repair cases of very short frenulum.
Therefore, the most effective solution is surgical intervention.
Short frenulum operation is a very simple surgery and rarely presents any complications.
Due to the simplicity of the short frenulum procedure, it is performed as an outpatient procedure under local anaesthesia, except in cases of very young children or men with significant phobias, in which the use of general anaesthesia may be considered. After the procedure, stitches are applied to the wound using resorbable material.
The procedure to repair a short frenulum, whatever it is, consists of releasing the point of tension. There are 3 possible solutions: circumcision (the usual operation for phimosis), frenulectomy and frenuloplasty.
It is the urologist who is primarily responsible for advising the patient on which of these techniques is the most appropriate for him, depending on his specific case.
In all 3 procedures, local anaesthesia is used and the wound is sutured with a resorbable material.
- Circumcision: this technique involves cutting off the foreskin completely, so that the glans penis is completely uncovered.
- Frenuloplasty: this is the plastic surgery technique for repairing the frenulum. It achieves a much more aesthetic result, as it also removes the excess skin around the frenulum, as well as eliminating the frenulum.
- Frenectomy or frenulectomy: the procedure consists of the complete removal of the frenulum. Its purpose is purely functional, that is, to free the frenulum.
These procedures usually take 30 minutes on average and recovery is relatively quick, usually complete after about 4 weeks.
What are the advantages of the short frenulum surgery?
By operating on the short frenulum, the glans penis can be fully uncovered and as a direct result, sexual intercourse will be more pleasurable by eliminating discomfort and tension.
Another advantage of frenulum surgery is that by uncovering the entire glans penis, the appearance of the penis can be about 0.5 cm longer, but the penis remains the same.
Short frenulum surgery is a very simple operation that is usually performed in conjunction with circumcision.
After the short frenulum surgery, the risk of the frenulum tearing during sexual intercourse or other activities is completely eliminated.

Care after frenuloplasty surgery
One of the points that most interest patients who have undergone short frenulum surgery, or circumcision, is the aftercare.
Here are some recommendations to follow after the short frenulum surgery:
- It is normal to have slight bleeding the day after the surgery, do not worry.
- A few days after the operation, you should visit your doctor to check that your recovery is going well. Your doctor may prescribe medication to combat any discomfort and to prevent infection.
- Erections should be avoided during the healing process, as the skin in the area is extremely sensitive.
- Sexual intercourse can be resumed more or less 3 to 4 weeks after the operation. But in each individual case this time may vary, as it really depends on the level of healing of the patient. If in doubt, it is always best to wait or consult a doctor.
After the short frenulum surgery, we must take a series of precautions to ensure that recovery takes place as quickly as possible and without complications, similar to those that must be taken after any operation that uses stitches:
- Once a day, wash the area thoroughly with lukewarm water and neutral soap and dry it carefully, always without rubbing. Apply some antiseptic and cover with gauze to avoid rubbing against clothing.
- It is also recommended to avoid drinking alcoholic beverages until 24 hours after the operation, mainly because of the anaesthesia.
- It is very favourable for healing after the operation to rest for a couple of days before returning to work.
The most important thing is to follow the medical instructions given to you by the specialist. In this way, recovery will be much faster and more effective.
After the short frenulum operation, it is necessary to wait around 3 or 4 weeks to resume sexual relations.
When should I see a doctor?
- If you have prolonged bleeding.
- If you have signs of infection.
- If the discharge from the wound has an unpleasant odour.
- If the area is very swollen or red.
- If you have serious difficulty urinating.
- If the pain is very intense and does not stop with the medication prescribed by the doctor.
- If after a couple of weeks you do not notice any improvement in the healing process.
In any case, if you have any questions that the recovery process after the short frenulum operation is going as it should or if you think that any complication or anomaly is occurring, consult your doctor.
