What does vasectomy surgery involve?
- Vasectomy is a permanent surgical method of contraception performed on men, which consists of preventing the passage of sperm through the vas deferens.
- Vasectomy is permanent, it is one of the most effective methods of contraception, with a success rate of over 99% in protecting against pregnancy.
- It is an outpatient surgery, i.e. it does not require hospitalisation after the operation and has no negative effects on the man's sexual performance, nor on ejaculation or ability to reach orgasm.
Vasectomy is a surgical male sterilisation treatment. The procedure consists of the section or ligation of the vas deferens, whose function is to transport the sperm to mix with the semen.

Make an appointmentIt is very important to clarify that vasectomy surgery does not interfere with a man's sex life, nor with his sexual appetite or libido, nor with his erection or ability to reach orgasm.
There are two types of surgical techniques. Vasectomy with a scalpel and vasectomy without a scalpel, both of which consist of the following procedures:
Vasectomy with a scalpel
Two small incisions are made in the skin of the scrotum to access the vas deferens, sectioning the vas deferens and sealing the ducts. After the procedure, the incisions are sutured with a pair of absorbable stitches in each one.
No-scalpel vasectomy
This technique was developed with the intention of performing the intervention in a less invasive way, reducing the possibility of complications and increasing the speed of the procedure.
During this technique, the conventional scalpel is replaced by mosquito forceps, which are characterised by their sharp tips.
An opening is made in the skin of the scrotum without cutting and without the need for stitches afterwards. The procedure is complemented by the use of other ring-shaped forceps, which fix the vas deferens through the skin and isolate it from the rest of the internal-scrotal structure.
Although this technique slightly improves the recovery time, the conventional vasectomy is just as viable and effective. If you are interested in no-scalpel vasectomy surgery, please contact us to see if our specialists can perform the procedure.
Does vasectomy affect erection and ejaculation?
No. The vasectomy procedure has nothing to do with the quality of the erection, as neither the blood circulation of the penis nor the nerves that are responsible for the erection are damaged. The only purpose and consequence of this procedure is to prevent sperm from being present in the semen.
Vasectomy does not affect ejaculation either. As mentioned above, this procedure consists of ligating or cutting the vas deferens, through which the sperm flows. Therefore, the semen continues to contain all its elements with the exception of the spermatozoa.
How long does it take to be able to resume sexual relations?
Specialists advise waiting at least 72 hours after the operation before resuming sexual relations. However, the ideal is to abstain from sex for the first week. It is important for the patient to be aware that vasectomy does not yet work as a method of contraception, until it is verified by an analysis that shows that there are no spermatozoa in the semen.
Sexual abstinence is also recommended as the patient may have testicular discomfort for a couple of days, so waiting this period is advisable to alleviate symptoms and return to routine.
Why avoid sex without contraception after surgery?
Since there is still a risk of pregnancy after vasectomy, the patient is advised to continue using contraception after surgery, as infertility is not immediate. Active sperm are still present after the operation. In general, active sperm are eliminated with about 15-25 ejaculations.
So the man will not be totally infertile until the active sperm is eliminated and at least two spermiograms have been performed to check that there are no sperm in the semen.
When and for what purpose should a spermiogram be performed?
The seminogram or spermiogram is an analysis used to determine the success of the vasectomy. It consists of analysing the composition of the semen, which after vasectomy should only be composed of secretions coming from the prostate and liquid coming from the seminal vesicle and the total absence of spermatozoa, which would come from the testicles.
It is normally carried out 2 or 3 months after the surgery, and in most cases the analysis is done twice. This analysis certifies that the process has been carried out correctly and that there are no sperm in the semen, i.e. the man is sterile.
Advantages of vasectomy in sexual relations
Vasectomy has numerous advantages for patients who decide to undergo it. In terms of the benefits related to sex, we highlight the following:
- Total contraceptive efficacy, after the two negative spermiograms, the man is totally sterile.
- Both the patient and his partner will be able to enjoy sex without any concern for pregnancy.
- It is not necessary for the woman to take contraceptive measures after the vasectomy has been performed and confirmed to be successful.
- It does not cause any discomfort or affect the enjoyment of sexual relations.
Therefore, vasectomy is a treatment performed for male sterilisation, a simple method with a high success rate. It is an outpatient surgery, i.e. it does not require hospitalisation after the intervention and has no negative effects on the man's sexual performance.
