  • Phimosis or circumcision surgery is a simple operation with excellent results, eliminating the discomfort previously suffered by the patient.
  • Specialists recommend abstaining from sexual intercourse after the operation for at least 4 weeks to avoid healing problems with the stitches, although it may be longer.
  • Although the healing process is tedious during the first few weeks, there are numerous medical and sexual benefits, as sexual relations are more comfortable as the discomfort is eliminated.

What does phimosis surgery consist of?

Circumcision is a surgical procedure that involves removing the foreskin covering the glans penis.

As for the procedure, after undergoing the pre-operative procedure, the patient goes to the hospital in advance of the surgery. Once in the hospital, he/she is called to surgery and transferred to a room where he/she will be provided with operating theatre clothes.

  • Inside the operating theatre you will meet the surgeon and usually an assistant and the anaesthetist.
  • There you will be placed on the stretcher, your penis will be cleaned and disinfected and then the area will be anaesthetised with a local anaesthetic.
  • During the circumcision, the patient will feel the penis being manipulated but will not feel any pain or tugging thanks to the anaesthetic.
  • At this point the surgeon will section off the remaining part of the foreskin and suture the area with stitches, which are usually absorbable, although depending on the doctor, he may choose to place stitches that fall out on their own after a few weeks.
  • Once sutured, the doctor bandages the area and instructs the patient on how to care for the wound. He or she will probably prescribe painkillers to control discomfort, but not aspirin, which hinders healing.
  • Finally, the patient is accompanied to get dressed and can then go home on their own.

Phimosis surgery lasts approximately 30 minutes and is a very simple and common surgical procedure.

Below we will answer questions about sexual aspects after circumcision and when sex can be resumed after the operation.

How long does it take to be able to resume sexual relations?

Specialists agree that the patient must be cautious after the operation and control his or her impulses, respecting the times and guidelines to be followed for a successful recovery.

Generally speaking, full recovery after circumcision lasts approximately 4 weeks on average, although there are cases in which the patient recovers sooner and others in which the patient takes longer to recover, depending on each case and the patient's capacity for recovery.

The circumcision stitches will dissolve on their own and fall out after approximately 7 to 14 days, although there are cases where they last up to a month after surgery. That is why it is not recommended to make efforts in the area in case of problems or complications until after a month or until the area is fully recovered.

As for the time to resume sexual relations, if the healing process follows a correct rhythm, after 4 weeks it is usually possible to resume masturbation, maintaining the necessary precautions. It is not recommended to start earlier, as there may still be stitches and these may open up, thus prolonging recovery.

Similarly, if there are still stitches or if the area feels too tight, it is best to avoid this so that healing can take place correctly.

On the other hand, sexual relations with a partner can be resumed with a little more time, normally after 5 weeks after the operation. The patient may notice some differences in the case of having had sexual relations before the surgery, the most common being hypersensitivity, which is progressively reduced during the following weeks.

However, as with masturbation, before resuming sexual intercourse, it is best that the stitches are fully healed and healing is as advanced as possible to avoid problems.

Why avoid sex during recovery?

As after any operation, the patient must allow his or her body to recover by resting and following the indications for healing. If the patient has undergone phimosis surgery, the same applies, but special care must be taken for reasons that will be explained below.

Men who have undergone circumcision surgery should wait several weeks before masturbating or engaging in any other sexual activity, as this can interrupt the healing process and can lead to complications.

It should be noted that after circumcision, it is necessary and advisable to take a few days of complete rest. After surgery, the penis may be swollen and red for several weeks. In addition to burning when urinating.

A couple of weeks after the procedure, a protective layer forms on the tip of the penis and the discomfort subsides. As mentioned above, it is best to wait three to four weeks after the procedure before swimming or any other sport.

It is therefore between four and six weeks after the procedure when you can return to normal sexual activities. We remind you that returning to sexual intercourse or masturbation too soon may cause the stitches to pop out and prolong the discomfort and the time of sexual abstinence.

Advantages of circumcision in sexual relations

Circumcision surgeries are simple interventions that have been performed for a long time, with the advantages outweighing the potential for risks or complications.

The sexual benefits of circumcision are usually listed as follows:

  • Increased sexual performance. Slightly reduced sensitivity of the glans penis may lead to longer sexual encounters.
  • Sensation of increased length. This is simply a sensation perceived by some patients because cutting the frenulum frees the penis from this downward pulling tension and gives the sensation of increased length, although the penis is actually the same.
  • Sensation of increased thickness of the glans penis. This is because the pressure that the foreskin exerts on the glans disappears, preventing the characteristic discharge from the penis and causing the tip of the penis to be perceived as larger when it "dries out".
  • Hygiene: Circumcision can facilitate male genital hygiene by removing the foreskin, which reduces the build-up of smegma (a whitish substance) under the foreskin. Some people find that cleanliness is easier after circumcision.
  • Reduced risk of infection: Removing the foreskin can decrease the risk of certain infections, such as balanitis (inflammation of the glans penis) and phimosis (narrowing of the opening of the foreskin). However, it is important to note that good hygiene and proper care of the penis can prevent these conditions in most cases.
  • Decreased risk of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs): Circumcision has been found to slightly reduce the risk of certain STDs, such as HIV, human papillomavirus (HPV) and genital herpes infection. However, circumcision alone is not a complete protective measure and does not replace the use of condoms or other safe sex practices.
