Postoperative period after phimosis surgery, circumcision

• The patient leaves the hospital shortly after the phimosis operation as it is an outpatient surgery.
• During the postoperative period it is important to take proper care of the wound to avoid infection.
• The postoperative period for phimosis surgery is simple and is fully completed 2 weeks after the surgery.

After the phimosis surgery, the patient is taken to a room where he or she will rest for a while until he or she is discharged and can go home. Similarly, before leaving the centre, the surgeon or a member of the nursing team will explain how to care for the wound during recovery at home. 

Post-operative follow-up dates will also be arranged to ensure that no complications occur.

The doctor will prescribe painkillers to relieve the pain and postoperative discomfort associated with phimosis, circumcision surgery. 

Once at home, it is important to take care of the wound according to the explanations given by the medical team. Although they will give the patient the relevant indications, we explain below the wound care that should be carried out during the postoperative period.

• Regarding wound care, it is vital to keep the glans area clean to avoid infection.
• Do not be afraid to urinate, as contrary to popular belief it does not hurt and no blood comes out. What you do need to remember is to avoid getting the gauze/bandage wet for the first 24 hours, drying it if it gets a little wet. After removing the bandage, the gauze should be changed every day after washing the wound.
• When it is time to fall asleep, it is recommended to have a basin of cold water at the foot of the bed at night in case of nocturnal erections. If they do occur, put your feet in the basin and wait for it to pass. The main problem with erections during the first few days is that they become inflamed, causing pain and tightness due to the stitches in the wound, and may even pop out if you are not careful.
• During the first two weeks, the surgical wound should be carefully washed daily to avoid complications. After that, dry and apply betadine, leaving the penis to air dry. Dirt or soap should be kept out, so it is recommended that the penis be washed separately from a full shower.

• A gauze pad should be used to protect the glans penis. On the other hand, to reduce inflammation, it is recommended to keep the penis upwards and wear tight underwear to prevent the penis from moving and thus avoid annoying chafing.
• The stitches used in the phimosis surgery are usually reabsorbable and usually disappear after 14 days, but it all depends on each case.
• It is normal to wake up with some blood on the gauze due to rubbing or involuntary nocturnal erections.
• It is recommended to avoid sexual intercourse for 3 to 4 weeks after the procedure, as erections may be painful. After that time there is no problem in maintaining an active sex life. In some cases, many patients report improved sexual performance after circumcision.
• If any yellowish or white fluid comes out of the wound during the postoperative period at home, it is important to contact the doctor or hospital immediately.
